Hey guys!
I've been pondering a question for quite some time, and was wondering if you could clear it up for me.
On the market, oftentimes there seems to be variations in graphics cards.
For example, with the upcoming ATI 2600 XT series there seems to be 256 mb and 512 mb GDDR-4 memory options.
What is the difference between the two? Is the 512 (or higher memory option in any case) substantially more powerful (proportionally to its memory advantage)? And am I screwing myself over by falling in love with a laptop that only has the 256 option (the HDX)?
Thanks!

512 megs of ram isn't going to double performance or anything. maybe 10%. in some situations, it wont make any difference. in higher resolutions it will matter more than 10%. but you aren't shooting yourself in the foot by going with 256 meg card.

Not yet. 512MB will help with newer games, though. Depends on how much more it costs. For $50-$75, I'd go with the higher memory amount. You can almost always turn down the texture quality inside a game, though, which will let you go further on less memory.

Alot of cards don't have enough memory bus bandwidth to fully utilize the 512mb they are packing. In some cases its just a marketing scheme. But for the really high end cards that have enough memory bus bandwidth you can see the difference.
