Which chip will do better, an ATI 64MB shared, an Intel Extreme 2 64MB shared, or a GeForce 4 420 32MB dedicated, or will there be a significant difference between any of them? If there isn't I will definately go with a Centrino with an Intel chip, but if there is then I'll step back to an Athlon XP-M with an ATI Radeon. Could the processors make a big difference as well?

It's between those three cards that I will find the answer to my question. ;)

The ATI would be better than the intel. I THINK (not sure though) that 64mb shared is about equivilent to a 32mb dedicated. Unless the processors are very different speedwise, they shouldnt make a difference.

I would say it depends on what games you will be playing. Maybe you dont need a top of the line graphics card (not that the three you mentioned are top of the line however).

Im sure someone else will be able to further advise you.

I would stay clear of the Geforce 4 420, it is a very dated card and a lot of the newer games will not work with it

The types of games I will be playing are nothing special. Counter-Strike and I'd like to load up some Quake III, but otherwise...I'll probably get bored with them and go back to Civ 3 and Baseball Mogul.

So the Intel chip is that bad, huh?

Thanks for the comments, and keep the opinions going...I still haven't really heard someone say something definitive...

**EDIT** Just saw that I can get an HP zv5000 series notebook with a 64MB dedicated GeForce 4 online for under 1000 bucks. What do you think? Definately better than my other options?

the Zv5000 has a rather outdated graphics GPU the Geforce 4 Go 440 its may have been good 2 years ago, but it horrid now u can get an Emachine laptop for 1299 at bestbuy. it has an ATI Mobility redeon 9600, iam a former owner and that Laptop is by no means a Slouch.

Beware of the Cracking Plastic hinge covers its only cosmetic tho.
    and wont effect machine operation.

It probably depends on the game more than anything. I read that Doom3 will NOT run on any system with shared memory. You have to have at least 64M of dedicated video RAM or you're out of luck. If you are looking to make a purchase of a new laptop, go with something that has at least the above mentioned 64M dedicated memory and is DX9 compliant. Mobility Radeon 9600/9700/9800 should do nicely.
