Hi all, first off, here's the specs of my laptop.
Uniwill 259EN3
1.86 Pentium M
6600Go (87.25 drivers)
60 GB 5400 rpm (22GB free)
1 Gig Corsair
XP Home
When I play games like BF2 and CS:S, I notice that every few seconds there's a split second stutter, which is very annoying especially when I encounter enemies (since that split second stutter can easily kill me). This is most likely related to the heating issue in a laptop, since it happens more often after long periods of gameplay, but it still exists when I even play for the first few minutes.
Is this very common for all laptops?
Will a laptop cooler greatly help this stutter issue? If so, which laptop cooler do you recommend? I'm going to be studying abroad in a few months (yes I am aware of the voltage differences) and I would like to know something that is portable.
I'm defragging my laptop as we speak (and the analysis has a *lot* of red), so I'm seeing if that's the problem.

are you playing online? if you are then maybe its your connection lag that is causing the strutter. i have the same graphics card as you but i have no stutter on BF2., and i pplay on the Highest settings possible on 1024x786 resolution and with AA on 4x .
-
Yeah. I'm playing online. But connection isn't the problem. It's broadband (I also play BF2 on my tower computer, but sadly, I prefer my laptop since graphics and framerate is superior). This happens even when I'm on single player mode.
-
how much RAM dose your go 6600 have?
-
hmmmmmmmm. do you have alot of things running in the background?
-
what are your GPU Core temperatures after and before you game?
what are your temperatures during Idle.
because you should not have any problems with a 256MB Go6600. i have a 128MB and mine works GREAT, no stutter or anythig. -
256MB Ram. And Hardly anything on. Antivirus off and stuff.
From what I've read on other forums, seems like heat takes into play with some laptops. From what I've been seeing, normally if the laptop begins to get hot, the graphcis begin to stutter a bit.
Regarding background programs - any programs you use to disable programs while you play?
Edit: My temperature is 63 C idle, (53 C Ambient) and probably goes to 75, during gameplay. -
Ctrl+Alt+delete. go to the task list and end task any unnecessary programs.
hmmm. but that is odd you know. the Go6600 is quite a powerful graphics card. and coupled with 256MB Ram should make it unstoppable.
did you try to turn off AntiAlising? -

It's a different laptop, so you have to take that into account.
That is not normal to have a split-second stutter; I know what you mean. A restart normally fixes it for me. What type of software are you using for anti-virus? -
It does sound like just a "Internet issue" the heating is a little concern but i would check your ping to the server you are playing first. See if there is any packet loss etc.
-
What kind of settings are you using?? Everything maxed, bf2 ran like crap on my m1710 before I got 2 gigs of RAM. It really chews your memory up. Try lowering your res or some other settings
-
Its probably the lack of two gigs of RAM. BF2 is a RAM hog.
And just because you have a fast connection doesnt mean someone else in the game has a bad connection and is slowing everything down. -
you can try to check old drivers and see if there is other that gives you better performance and less heat
-
I give up. Tried a couple of old drivers and I'm still getting that same hiccup. It's not only in BF2. It's in CS:S as well. So it can't be the RAM problem since i play both of them in mid settings.
Maybe a laptop cooler will help, I dont know. -

I don't think it's a heat-related problem; it is most likely a background process running. Could you provide us with a screenshot of your task manager list? Go into the Task Manager, take a print screen image of the process list and upload it. Perhaps we'll find something in there.
Have you tried disabling your firewall (if applicable) or antivirus? Try some non-online games and see if you have the same issue. -
Antivirus is McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0.0 as provided free by my school.
At all times On-Access Scan is disabled when I play games.
Task manager is listed as below.
Edit: Normally Aim is off when I game and Steam is off when I play other guys not related to CS:S, DoD:S, HL2, etc.
I played a pretty old online 3d game as well, hardly graphics intensive. After awhile, the graphics began to hiccup at times as well.
The reason why I was thought of it to be heating related because my old laptop (Toshiba A70 Sat, 1 gig ram, 3.2 p4, 9000 Radeon IGP) had issues with a short freeze in graphics similiar to what I experience now.
Drivers are now 84.12 v2.3 from TweaksRUs (thought those drivers would help because it helped another guy with graphic stutter/hiccup problems), but I still experience them. -

Hmm, doesn't seem like anything is out of the ordinary in there. Thanks for posting that.
Do you have any non-online games? I'd check for an update to your Ethernet card or wireless card, depending on which you use. Windows Update may find some.

Deedeeman, why post 3 times on a roe in stead of doing EDIT.
Thanks,

Specifically, due to graphics issues after several minutes of use, i experiance some of the following symptoms:
Switch to VGA mode after 2 minute hang (mentioned above)
Abnormal app crashing with a dialog box that looks normal, with no text!
Blue Screen of Death specifing an error with the main graphics dll.
So, it could probably have to due with the heat. -

I recently installed AVG AV and activated my stock Windoxs SP2 firewall as well as Adaware SE. Do you think any of these are causing the problem? Is it smart/safe to turn firewall AVG and Adaware off while playing CSS online?) -
I have the same problem as the OP.
I have a Geforce 7400 and when playing BF2 I get these split second stutters. It makes no difference in RTS games but in FPS games it renders them pretty much unplayable.
My laptop is 65c when IDLE and into 70's when gaming - I'm starting to wonder is the card just faulty, is the laptop poorly constructed or what, but its very annoying. -

BF2 really enjoys two gigs of RAM!

Chaz what do you think? (of my question
)
-
Uh.. Believe it or not guys but i'm also experiencing stutter on my 9400..
-
Played a good, long session of Company of Heroes lan tonight at a friends house, was a fair bit of random stuttering - and before anyone suggests it no my graphics settings aren't too high, the stutters are random in battles and in quiet periods -
I am not posting in this old thread without good reason.
I've had similar problems with my new laptop, a Clevo M570U-A with a C2D T7200 and Go 7800 GTX.
I have split second stutters every few seconds. I've tracked them with Rivatuner on the FPS graph. With Vsync on, I get a very consistent 60fps until the stutters, where the fps drops to 34-45 or so, then resumes the 60fps.
So far, I've observed this in CS: Source and World of Warcraft. I have no idea what may be causing this problem. I thought it may be my video card, but you guys seem to have different cards. Is this a dual core issue? Has anyone since solved this problem? Please help out if you can! Thanks.
