That's because nvidia rather than selling an honest product and being content with it rebranded the 4xxM with a slight increase in frequencies and also upgraded the cards in the decimal nomenclature.

So ironically the 550M has 96 shaders, like 425/430/435M while the GT445M had 144. The GT 555M is the rebranded 445M.

This ridiculous situation nvidia managed to pull is only their usual crap, and is in a tight competition with the rebrand of the 2xxM to 3xxM.

AMD is doing the same thing with the 6000M, maybe even worst.

In a way yes but they're not moving a 5650M to a 6770M for that matter. And some GPUs are using the Northern Islands architecture (Blackcomb and Whistler).

AMD are rebranding the new cards with lower numbering as they should be e.g. 5750m > 6570m while NVIDIA are rebranding the new cards higher when they shouldn't be in performance terms e.g. 445m >555m.

    AMD wins. NVIDIA just confuses.

Heh, from Nvidia the best performance/dollar will probably remain with the GTX 470M. Which is fine. The 485M again very fast, but cost defies all logic of why someone would buy it. Can almost buy SLI 580 + Sandy Bridge desktop for the same price of the 485M alone. Well for now that's how I see it, if you want good performance stick with 4xxM series from Nvidia.

i honestly love my 480m and have no complaints about it. it has tackled every single task i've thrown at it with flyin colors. i've never even seen the thing get hotter than 65*c - 66*c after hours, and hours, of gaming. there are just some ppl that would like to have the best, or one of the best, single GPU setups cuz they don't want to deal with the added hassle of dual GPU setups.

i really can't wait to see how nvidia is gonna implement their new cards. i'm hoping that it'll retain it's current MXM specs so that i can upgrade my 480m to an 5XXm when the time comes. :D

The thing is, the "strongest GPU" came with a cost that was not really necessary. It isn't that much more powerful than the HD5870 or 460 to warrant a nearly 3 times the cost.

I don't have a 480m and likewise I have been able to play everything without issues, and with incredible temps. There is no game an HD5870m can't run that requires a 480m. If said game existed, it wouldn't run on either card good enough.

But luckily the HD6970m and 485m bring a great increase in performance. Sadly, the 485m still costs stupidly much....

i see what u'r sayin, but that performance:cost ratio thing is pretty much a moot point to some ppl. it was worth every single penny to me.

Does everybody reading this thread realise the whole point of NVidia's announcement is to divert attention from ATI's unveiling of their own products some of which are actually partly a new design ... thanks TSMC.

So this whole thread, and ironically my post as well I know, is falling for that very strategy...

I thought that NVIDIA was mainly rebranding - annoying many 500ms are moving up (I.e. 445 to 555) but there were some changes such as 192 bit gddr5 on 555m where I think it was previously 128bit ddr3/gddr5

Looking forward to gt555m or ATI equivalent - I want that with optimus & sandy bridge 2720qm in a 15-16 inch and I'm sold.
