Well I pre ordered this game like 2 weeks ago, always liked the GTA series. Anyway, a bit after I pre ordered it via internet i noticed it has very high system requirements. Yeah I know i kinda made a mistake there, should've checked the req's before pre ordering the game.

I tested this at 'canyourunit' website and I got the following results:

Is there any chance my system can run the game?

You should be able to run it, but just barely. It's a very cpu intensive and your cpu may not be able to handle it very well.

I doubt it, though I don't think low settings would be impossible (that's not from expert knowledge, just personal opinion)

You could add another gig or two of ram, but if the specs they released are accurate requirements, your CPU may not have the power to deal with it too well anyway...

I guess all you can do is start with lowest settings, think about getting some more RAM and cross your fingers...

There's always the option of overclocking if you really want to go down that path (though I guess you're using a laptop? so cooling would be too much of a problem).

    this is a desktop?

you are looking at lowest settings, barely playable right now.

but you can fix yourself without needing too much money...

upgrade ram to 4GB (cheap, $25 maybe). upgrade graphics card to something decent. ati 3870 can be had for $90. 9600GT is $78.99, 9800GT is $99... i really recommend the 9800GT only, considering the price / performance.

    newegg.com

your processor might still be a little bit slow, but you COULD overclock it...

Yeah, if you have a desktop you have a lot of room for improvement (given a little cash).
$100 should be more than enough to upgrade the necessary parts:
Around $65 for a new CPU (An athlon X2 2.7ghz will pass for that price)
The rest you can put towards RAM

I have never heard of a laptop 8500GT. There are only 8400M GT, 8400M GS below the 8600 series.

Get a better video card, That's probebly all you'd need.

This site IS correct though, these are the official minimum requirements.

Your system is fine for this game so long as you upgrade that video card..

As others have said, go get yourself an HD3870, 8800GT/9800GTX or something like that. They're fairly cheap, around $99 or less, and with that you should be able to run the game maxed out with no AA.

Upgrading your video card would show a huge improvement; the 8500GT is pretty poor by todays standards, but you should be able to run the game on low settings enjoyably if your not too fussy(about the same as my 8400m GT oc'd :D)

So it looks like GTA IV will require Pixel Shader 3, putting it in a required DX9 realm, I wonder if it will utilize DX10? I'm waiting for a game to come out that really uses it how it was designed to be used, and with this game being so CPU intensive, offloading some of the CPU might improve frames.

I think I heard somewhere by some company that you can't make a game support both DX10 and DX9 on the same engine because you would need to recreate every one of the shaders, and all of the geometry specifically for D3D10 for it to actually show any performance benefits over D3D9. I don't think we'll ever see true DX10 games anytime soon because of the sole purpose that DX10 does not and will never run under windows XP because without the exclusivity of DX10 on vista, hardly any gamers would ever use it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky supports DX10 all the way back to DX8 using X Ray1.5 engine.

I hope they use DX10 to boost performance, like what was done with Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed and Unreal Tournament 3.
