Gtx 280m Vs Sli 9800m Gt Vs Sli 8800m Gtx Vs 4870x2

Can somebody line these up based on performance else being equal (same CPU etc)?
Sager NP5797 comes with GTX 280M ~ $1700
XPS M1730 comes with SLI 9800m GT ~ 1800
Older XPS M1730 comes with 8800m GTX ~ $2000
Asus W90 comes with 4870x2 ~ $2200

Price wise the same order can be followed. I am trying to figure out which one has the best bang for the money. Also can you upgrade Asus without voiding the warranty? I know you can do it in Sager and XPS without loosing the warranty altough getting into the XPS is a hassle.

In terms of power per system:

W90 > M1730 > NP5797

But $1800 for a system with SLi 9800M GTs is a great deal! Looks like things are heating up in the high end notebook market pricing wise.

The two card solutions win with 4870s > 9800M GT, obviously, and please understand that the 9800M GT and 8800M GTX are the exact same card.

No. Hell no mate. Not even almost.

Single cards, yes the 280M stomps out the GT.

 

In any game that supports sli the sli 9800's will out perform the GTX280, in games that don't support sli, like GTA4, the GTX280m will outperform the 9800's.

 

I doubt it will stomp it out either. nVidia haven't been doing much lately. Their newer cards are only few shaders more than the older and with a little higher clocks.

 

just to be fair, it is clocked a good bit higher, with 32 more shaders, that's 1/3 more.

 

Actually the clocks are only 17-19% percent higher. Not a big improvement for a next generation card, just my opinion.

 

of course, i don't think anyone regard it as a next gen card, it's very similar to fx3700m, which has been around for quite a while now.

Geforce 280m GTX cannot outperform the 8800mSLI or 9800m GT/GTX SLI.
280m have 128 shaders as 88 has 96 shaders so in SLI mode it will be 96X2 so its way more powerful than 280m. Now in market I have not seen 280M SLI and evem it comes it gonna cost a hell lot of money. I guess like 1000$ or more. As well as heat is another problem as in every blog it is said that atleast a 17" laptop is required with a lot of cooling power.

 

XPS M1730 is so heavy to cool 8800m SLI now you can guess what will be required to cool the 280m or 280m SLI??

 

If 280M is 20% better than 9800M gt and sli creates a 40% performance increase compared to a single card, we can say sli 9800M gt will be roughly 17% better than gtx 280m, right?

 

so i guess the m1730 is now in the bang for your buck category. It's build quality is amazing and it now beats the Qosimio in the sli range. Wow, finally dell steps up there game, now if only we could get better ram on that baby. Im getting me a m1730 this summer for sure. WOWOWOWOW 1600 bucks is good for the 2.4ghz processor and the SLi setup. Is there a better deal out there!!!!

Me too, as you can see from my sig. I'll be upgrading my notebook to the GTX 260M as soon as I can, so I'll keep you up to speed once I put it to the test.

I'll break it down a bit further for the sake of discussion.

9800M GTX (65nm G92) vs GTX 260M (55nm G92b) vs desktop 9800 GT (65nm G92a)
all 112 shaders; 500/1250/800 - vs - 550/1375/950 - vs - 600/1500/900

Verdict: 260M is pretty equal to this 9800 GT. I did some reading on G92b GTX+, and they take overclocks extremely well, so 675/1650/1080 should be easily reachable if mine overclocks well.

GTX 280M (55nm G92b) vs desktop 9800 GTX (65nm G92) vs desktop 9800 GTX+ (55nm G92b)
all 128 sp; @ 585.1463/950 - vs - 675/1688/1100 - vs - 738/1836/1100

Verdict: Though based on the G92b, 55nm GTX+, the 280M just won't reach those insane core/shader clocks. The 280m should at least equal the desktop GTX clock speeds though, probably just passing the core/shader clocks for a possible 700/1700/1100, if in the hands of someone like me.

 

think of it this way:

GTX 260M is a desktop 9800 GTX with all its clocks/frequencies reduced by 20%

Same with the GTX 280M to the 9800 GTX+

 

Without GDDR5 the 4870s in the W90 are just 4850s with 50Mhz extra on the core clock.

They're not at the level of ATI's Mobility 4870 reference cards and I'd probably put them below the Mobility 4860 reference cards.

actually the GTX 280m is 20% better than the 9800m GTX which is like 2-5% better than the 9800m GT.

K, I forgive you lol. So... the 260M must be a GTX+ with 16 shaders cut off and clocked even lower, because the first GTX never went 55nm/G92b or came with 1GB of video memory.

Man, and I almost added a disclaimer to that before I posted it. That was my own conjecture, straight up. But, if we'll concede and give the 280M 20% over the 9800M GTX, which is presently standing about equal to the 4850, then the 280M has to be superior to this DDR3 "4870", which is just the 4850 with +50 on the core and shader. Now this phantom DDR5 chip with the higher clocks will be a different battle.

Thoughts?

 

GDDR5 would add about a 5-10% performance on average over GDDR3 with the same base core and memory clock, and probably more when AA is involved and/or if the settings are nearing the memory buffer. Also, the Mobility 4850 (as seen in the MSI GT725) is also a desktop 4850 reduced by 20% as well, and on the desktop side of things, a 9800 GTX+ matches pretty well against a desktop 4850. However, the GTX 280M has 1gb of memory vs the 512mb GDDR3 4870s. More memory can help in some games and can extend the frame buffer significantly too.

 

If Nvidia GDDR3 can compete with ATI GDDR5 then what gonna happen with Nvidia with GDDR5. It will be like a ferrari with addon nitrous.

 

You're pricing are all messed up... First of NP5797 starts 1800, the Asus W90 has a lot better specs. And if you were to bring the NP5797 close to the Asus W90 it would cost atleast 2100, and still be inferior. Same goes for the Dell, it would cost 2,200 for something with similar settings as the Asus.

Overall the Asus W90 has the best spec and best hardware. The others don't even compete with it. However, the biggest downfall is is that its an 18.4". Well its a downfall for me, because I wouldn't be carrying that around.

 

Screen is not my main concern. The lockups on the asus makes me think twice. I'll be upgrading what ever I get. I have bunch of CPUs like q9100, t9800, t9400 etc...I also have two sets of 8gb ram ddr2. so trying to find out which one will be the best to start with. sager i would buy would cost me around $1.7K. I configured and xps with sli9800 gt's t9300, vista ultimate, n-wifi for $1790 shipped. we have an asus for sale here for $2K.

 

Yeah the new m1730 pricing really shocked me. I mean, SLI 9800M GT startng at $1699 US? That's crazy.

 

yea, but upgrading it the slightest bit boosts the price up significantly, like +$100 to get 4GB DDR2 ram..., and even more to get a better CPU.

 

I thought the HD 4850 would be better than the 9800M GTX, considering the desktop counterparts HD 4850 (even underclocked) is better than the 9800 GT (9800M GTX base).

Somebody should read something about GDDR5. Actually I thing that this memory must be with different name. The last Dual Date Rate was GDDR4. GDDR5 actualy is Quad Data Rate. 800MHz GDDR5 = 3200MHz Effective

 

I think the price is just promotional and soon gonna change. I also hear some rumour of dell waiting for gtx 280m instead of 9800m gtx.

 

They're already offering the 9800M GTX in some countries I think the m1730 needs a platform update, before thinking of the GTX 280M cards.

 

i think they need a huge overhaul re design time for the xps1800 seris

 

I hope it's not done by Dell's own design team...

 

I dont think if Dell gonna go for 1800 series or a platform update coz Dell in other countries are already offering 9800m GTX and they wont just stop selling it within a few weeks of introducing 9800m GTX. Eventhough GTX 280m is not available in SLI right now so 8800m/9800m SLI will crush it.
