I was just wondering about what kind of longevity this card would have if I went with a new machine. This card seems to be everywhere I turn when looking at medium-high gaming rigs. I am most interested in solid feature rich gaming, will this card hold up well in the medium to long term? Thanks!

I would guess, yes. Could you tell what's your budget?

If it's a product of technology the answer is always no.

That being said, once the latest and greatest has been released 2 months after you purchase your new laptop you "might" be able to struggle and suffer through the painful ownership of having outdated and inferior hardware for quite some time.

Some of the latest reviews for the new AMD 6970m are already claiming the 460m is "long in the tooth", however the card itself is still good for at least 1-2 years for the latest games.

I am aware of technology product cycle, I just wanted to make sure most of the games coming out through 2012 would be solidly playable at relatively higher settings.

    $1600-$1800

    Thanks for the replies

If you're spending $1600-$1800 you can afford an NP8150 with a 485 and that will definitely last you longer.

    460M is a medium-range card now... The 6970M/485M are the new 5870's

Can you link me a place that has that card for under 1800? I'm including shipping with this cost as well. I would also like to have more than 4gb ram. I just cannot find that deal anywhere.

I just upgraded my 4890 that still plays games on high at 1080p last week, I feel your pain :(

I do still keep a Core 2 Quad around, though... locked in the basement... where no one needs to know it exists...

I would wait for the release of the 6970 on sager notebooks, with that you can get the power needed and within your budget

Nothing wrong with a c2q, mine's 2 years old and still running like a champ.

Yeah C2Q with SLI have had a pretty good shelf life. Good investment if keep it more than two years.

I honestly think that as long as they keep making games in DX10 that this will still be playing new games for another 2 years.

Could very well be. With my last laptop I ended up putting in a Quad mobile, but that really wasn't my bottleneck, it was my GPU, the GTX 260m. But if I had SLI I wouldn't have even considered a new machine.
