Hello everyone, here's my situation. I love how Guild Wars runs on my new Vostro, and would like to continue playing it while I have downtime at school, but I fear that it's not going to keep me interested. I've recently downloaded and purchased GW:Nightfall, and find some of the gameplay to be quite boring. I've played WoW for about 8 months and loved how the game played, loved how everyone was able to play in the same sandbox. With GW, once you step outside of a city, it sure feels lonely. Anyway, did I buy the wrong Guild wars? Are the first one and Factions better than this one? Am I missing something to this game that makes it so desireable for others? The quest grinding and need for other NPC's to come with you on quests is not very fun to me. Please help me stay interested, I can't go back to WoW!

PS - I haven't delved too much into the battlegrounds on GW, how do they work in comparisson to Wow?

    Thanks in advance,
    -Josh

I only have Factions, but plan on buying the rest, especially Prophecies, as it is the typical fantasy setting...The games can be classed as a single-player RPG MMO...I've never really played another MMO, only played WoW trial for a day, didn't think it was worth the subscription.

I found the game boring at first, but as you progress, and get to a higher level, it gets better :)

I really would play WoW, it's seriously so addicting. But... I got the opportunity to be subsidized for going to school full time, and consequently it's way more valuable to me than going back to that game that doesn't "pause" LOL.

Well, I'm at lvl 12 so far, and not very interesting. I find the single player campaigns a little boring. How does the multiplayer fair against the single player? I don't like the part that you start out as a lvl 20 in multiplayer, do you even get to upgrade the character?

Single player ?? You mean PVE right ? Yes, you do more PVP to get more faction points to unlock more powerful items, skills. I have all 3 Guild Wars, planning to get GW:EN. I love the PVE elements. Also I do alot of Hall of Heros, but only Rank 5 ...... :(

If you find a decent guild in Guild Wars, its actualy quite fun. I have prophecies and factions, and used to play all the time. I've got 4 level 20s, necro/monk, warrior/monk monk/ranger and ele/monk. Its a fun game overall, u just need to play with other people to make it fun. I just installed it on my new laptop to see how it runs, and its pretty good.
The thing about PVP in guild wars is that its totaly skill based vs WoW which is much more gear dependent. Not that i mind since i have good gear =p 4 (4 peice s2 arena =D) But its something to consider, as you dont have to invest as much time in it.

So, would you all say that Prophecies and Factions are worth more of a purchase over Nightfall? If so, I'll go get one of those and quit playing NightFall, it's pretty bland. The environments are just normal. They inspire me just as much as "The Barrens" LOL!

I've never played nightfall myself, i couldnt say. But if you buy prophecies or factions, u just add the key to your account and it lets you access all areas. So you dont lose your nightfall purchase.

My view on PvE and the campaigns:

    Prophecies > Nightfall > Factions

Factions is actually really rushed and all, and the missions are really hard. It's pretty boring, in my opinion. Alliance Battles are really fun though.

Nightfall is really fun because of Heroes. You may not understand how to outfit them at first, but once you do, they're a boon to your team. They're better than Pick-Up Groups, in my opinion.

Prophecies is the longest and most in-depth campaign. It's pretty easy as well. In my opinion, it's the best campaign. However, Tyria (land of Prophecies) seems to be deserted these days.

Nightfall is fun. You'll get used to it.

Hmm... with all this being said, is there a game that is more close to the play of WoW? Something that will run just as well on my notebook and I can take it to campus with me?

The key to enjoying Guild Wars is to have people to play it with.

I've had great fun playing the PvE campaigns with a couple of friends.

Alone though, it's not really worth it.

(This is from the PvE perspective... For PvP, it might be a bit different)

From a PvE point of view, Prophecies is by far the best game. Nightfall comes in at second place, and Factions is last.

But if you want to play the PvE campaigns, either do it with a couple of friends, or find a guild.

This is probably the most important difference from, say, WoW. You can always play WoW and meet other random people. GW relies a lot more on you having people to play with, to really enjoy it.
But if you have someone to play it with, it's a really good game.

I have played WoW and own all 3 Guildwars standalones.

Let me tell you this. Stop comparing Guild Wars to World of Warcraft. They are two totally different games. WoW tends to more hardcore players, hence the grind, hours of raiding and such. Guild Wars tends to more causal players.

In Guild Wars, level 1-20 is like one big tutorial. Once you get to level 20, that's where the game begins. Items and gears are not necessary to be competitive. Although Guild Wars tries to eliminate almost all the grind in the game, there will also still be some sort of grind in a RPG just to let you have something to do. The most important thing is the amount of skills you obtain, and able to formulate a 8-skill combination that is effective. That is what Guild Wars is about.

I think you have bought the wrong game in Guild Wars. PVP in WoW is all about itematizations, or "ganking" at the opportune time. Guild Wars is more about team play, organization, positioning, and skills that work well with each other.

Nobody can really "help" you like a game. It's about what kind of style you enjoy playing and we can't force-feed you to enjoy the game.

I'm really not asking to be force fed as much as I'm asking for insight to the game, which I am indeed getting from the majority of all of you. This thread is really giving me more information on the game, exactly what I was looking for.

So, it appears as though it's more geared towards guilds, and taking the time to join up with players, not as much random game play that WoW yields. Interesting, and It'll give me more desire to play also.

Where in all of this would FFXI come in? Would it lean more towards WoW or GW as far as pvp goes? I really enjoy game experiences when I'm playing against other people.

Thanks again for all of the insight people, keep it coming, I'm learning a ton here.

Play PvP and earn some points to get skills for your Heroe's. It will make PvE much much easier. A Hero with good skill set are much stronger then the Henchmen.

-Make the Necro Hero into a Minion Master.
-Use one of the monks as a protection monk or healing monk with Offering of Blood for energy.
-Use the rit hero to spirit spam. Or put in a ele for some protection wards or another monk.
