Honestly it all depends what you're expecting out of the game.
IMO, Guild Wars isn't an MMO like WoW or L2 say. Seeing as there's no monthly fee, Guild Wars doesn't cater to people who spend lots of time to achieve things. In fact, "rare" weapons are no more powerful than regular max level weapons. Most of the time consuming things(farming a rare weapon, getting titles etc.) offers minimal advantages over the regular Joe.
However, Guild Wars does cater to skill. As Anet once said, they think skill=/=time(although arguably it takes time to gain a certain level of skill). Therefore, when you reach the maximum level(which is "only" 20 btw), there isn't any more growing in terms of large time consuming things, but only in terms of skill. Once you reach that maximum cap, all you need to do is buy max armor and weapons(and like I said, the cheapest max items have the same stats as the rare expensive ones). After that, it's all about skills, arranging a build that works for given situations and working with others(or NPCs) in order to successfully do whatever task.
Also, unlike most MMOs, Guild Wars is the type of game you can put down for a time and pick it up later. The only consequence to that is either skill changes or lack of people in a certain area(although there are NPC henchmen), but in general terms you won't be "behind" because you weren't spending time, you'll just be "behind" because you're not up to speed on changes in the game.
Guild Wars also lacks player kill and an open world. It works in instances so once you leave town, there isn't anyone else in the "world" except you, your team and some evil monsters
Other than that, GW follows a typical MMO type I suppose. Once in a while they update content and for large advancement, one must purchase the new chapters and such. What's fun also is that there's fun stuff happening at holiday events of the year(such as Halloween, Xmas or even Lunar New Year)

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
weird.
is that a standard symbolic "not equals"? -
in GW you can start a PVP char.. it will have "all" the weapons maxed and armor maxed out, but you can do only PVP with it... soo you fight other peoples equally... which means.. no one has advantage over another because one has real money to buy gold from chineses and buy epic ultra expensive mega hyper power items..
i used to love it =) now i play Eve -_- waiting till 2011 for GW2 =D -
Well I figure I'd use "!=", but wasn't sure that'd work either

that was an amazing review Forever_Melody. (sadly i don't know how to give rep...i'm a newb.)
Coming from a long time player it's quite fun. Cheap if anything but as melody said it really comes to skill and getting the right things. Also there have been plenty of nerfs and changes. I guess it's also good because there's more competition since it's much easier to get to the top. Furthermore unless you plan on playing PVP: doing missions, getting armor and titles do not require other players' input. If you want to play alone or do not have the patience to wait, you can succeed fairly well with some insight and a good group build. I guess the bad is that it deviates from all the traditional MMO's in a lot of aspects. As previously pointed out there's no moving while attacking and there's no jumping. Everything may feel simple and limited compared to other mmo's. Specially only having eight skills to bring to battle and having to 'spam' the skills. -

My opinions of Guildwars.
What it is: Not necessarily an MMORPG. I don't feel that Guildwars is an RPG. There's no role playing, and your actions have no consequence on any other player in the game. Grinding is not necessary at all. The rarest items/armor in the game performs 99% the same to any other weapon/armor in the game. I feel that it's more of a 3rd person active strategy game than an rpg. The only thing that is gained from actively grinding (in PVE or PVP) are titles.
Pros: GW actually requires skill to play. If you're a moron no one will invite you to a group (PVP or PVE) and reputation can travel fast. GW has the best pvp of any MMO "RPG" of its type. There are many different types of pvp and you can play by yourself or in pre-made groups of many different numbers of people. The ranking system is very good. You can play competitively by yourself, with a small/large group of friends, or with an entire guild. Guilds have their owns halls that they can customize/add things to. It's "free" to play.
Cons: Once you hit about 1/2 way through the game you won't get better gear. This can be seen as good or bad, but I feel it's bad only because I enjoy variety. The one thing I enjoyed about Diablo 2 was that there were multiple high end weapons and armor for every class, so not everyone was in cookie cutter gear, like WoW. On the flip side you can keep whatever weapons/armor you think look the coolest because they'll have the same stats. You have to buy every single game/expansion to be competitive. Most high ranking guilds won't take you if you don't have all the skills unlocked. Noobs will get shunned from Hall of Heroes groups. If you don't have the emote (unlocked with a level 3 pvp HOH title) most groups will ignore you, making the first 3 titles very hard to receive.
Overall feeling: Best pvp for any online "rpg". On the flip side it has one of the weakest pve settings, and has no real reward for pve. Also right after I stopped playing, and eye of the north came out I heard they made pvp pretty much easy mode with some of the new skills. I can't comment on this too much because I didn't play through eye of the north. -
PvP is kept balanced now because ArenaNET made it so that skills that are too powerful are changed to a PvP version of the skill (when you go to a PvP map obviously), where it is balanced (but kept powerful for PvE against the stronger monsters).
IMO, however, a lot of the outposts are dead now, and if you buy the game now there will be a lot of soloing with henchmen/heroes (Esp in prophecies) which kinda sucks... I remember when I used to play it 2-3 years ago all the time, played the entire game with other people and it was an absolute BLAST. I loved GvG so much, I will always remember Guild Wars as one of the best games I have played. I think now a lot of people have retired from it, I know I have... waiting for GW2.... -
Guildwars was good at the time being. Now it's not that fully populated. It's good a game actually and when you've maxed your level(20) the game actualy turns out to be better and better.
There is no limit in how you play the game, you can have 2 professions and add upgrades to your armor and weapons. You'll also have special events where you can harvest new exotic weapons.
You can have unique skills that require exploration. Each campaign has his own set of skills and weapons. It also gives you access to new professions. So in the end it also has a great replay value.
But as I said the game was great at it's time beeing. Now you'd be lucky to find a party. It's sad really, I've found this game to be one of thebest MMO's. -

The one thing I couldn never get past in Guild wars was the complete lack of items, I love how it is a skill based game... but finding exciting rare items was fatastic... helped to creat and economy in a game like WOW which is huge! a very fun aspect.... it just bothered me in GW

I played really extensively when it first came out and was heavily involved in the PvP scene so some of my thoughts here may be extremely outdated:
Guild Wars does have a campaign and story, but I don't find it particularly great. There isn't too much replayability after you've beaten everything the first time so there is a ton of people out there who just created yet another new character and want nothing more than to rush through all of the low level areas to get to the "good" stuff at the end. This means that if you just get the game now, it may be kinda hard to find lots of PUGs that will go through low level areas or missions slowly instead of just rushing through everything.
Once you do reach the highest level stuff, I find that there is really only so much you can do PvE wise. You can only go through Underworld or Fissure or any of those high level areas so many times before getting tired of everything. I found that you really had to be in PvP to get the most out of the games.
That being said, PvP in the random arenas is underwhelming to say the least and perhaps are just good for some quick fooling around and not serious PvPing. Tombs (which, if I understand now, is gone) is alot more serious but it is literally impossible to even think of getting through it with a PUG. Back then, all of the decent PUG teams basically required a favor of at least 3 (which really is pretty hard to get if you're only with PUGs) to even let in in it.
GvGs are nice, but then again, I don't find that there is too much of a point if you're not in a high ranking guild (back then, probably like 250+ rank). Getting into such guilds are really really tough unless you already had lots of high level PvP experience (insane favor) or unless you know people already in such guilds and they petition and invite for you. Should you get in, though, there are a wealth of options that really make the game shine.
Guild Wars, like everyone has said, does require more skill than grinding than most other MMORPGs. That being said, I find that there is an increasing amount of elitism among the PvP crowd that you MUST have like 5 favor or you MUST be able to talk in Ventrilo or there simply isn't a point to even go PvPing with you. While that certainly does ensure quality of those teams to an extent, they really deter newcomers to the PvP scene who may not have all of these things. -
I loved Guild Wars back in the day. I was also really involved in PvP and GvG (was in the guild Eternum Pariah/Jet Li if anyone remembers who they were). The game had a great PvP community, guild-hall.net was the gathering place for people to talk strategy/smack/etc. I stopped playing once the expansions came out, fired it up last week just to see what was up and it's still fun. If you can get all 3 for a good deal on steam, I think it's not a bad purchase.

The main focus of GW I think is the PvP.. and to make it worse, its almost impossible for a new player to get the fun out of it.. Why? Its hard to find guild if you dont have a PvP title, even if you have the skillz.. And to get those title, you need teams, most of the time, and no good teams will invite you because you dont have a title =P
Its kinda of stupid, but thats what happens in the game =/
I managed to get R9 in HOH, and with that I got in a guild rank 130-, but I started playing GW before the Faction campaign, it was easier to get PvP titles at that time... My friends that started after me, only got R3 because I invited them to my party, otherwise you will join in random teams that will die to the Henchs =D Yeap, sometimes i used to run around not showing my title and joining those teams for the LoLZ =P
anyway, it is a good game if you have someone to support you and help to get started, otherwise its gonna be a pain in the a** =X
