I don't know where to put this. So I thought this would be the most applicable place.

I just installed Guild Wars onto my Dell 9100 system. For some reason it runs really slow. The internet connection is fine. But the graphics skip and are jerky. I don't understand why.
    Here are the specs:
    P4 3.0ghz HT
    40gig 4200rpm hd
    ATI 9700 64meg
    512 meg ram
    xp pro

I tryed the game on my acer and it runs fine.
    Acer:
    PM 1.5ghz dothan
    60gig 4200rpm hd
    ati 9700 64meg
    512 meg ram
    xp pro

I think the processor is doing it, but shouldn't a P4 run games better than a PM? and in any case these specs are equal or higher than what the game needs so any solutions?

A couple things come to mind to check into.

Make sure your hard disk is being accessed in DMA mode, not PIO.

Same video driver version between the two systems?

System monitor app running in the background? Apps like Motherboard Monitor and other utilities that display system temps, drive conditions, etc. are notorious for causeing hickups or stuttering in games when they are running in the system tray. Might want to disable your resident anti virus program if your running run, as it can cause the same thing. If it turns out to be your AV software, you can probably have it exclude scanning the folder where GuildWars is running from, vs. turning it off completely.

Many times going through and updateing the drivers for chipset, network, vidoe and audio can resolve strange performance problems.

I checked the HD, and it was in ultra dma mode, i don't run any monitor apps, because they cause battery/mouse glitches. I think it maybe a heat problem. I noticed the p4 gets very hot, i think it may be too hot, and throttling itself back.

I have Guild Wars running on my i9200 with 512MB of RAM and I have antialiasing at 4x, video quality all of the way up and all (I think) of the visual effects on high and it runs a quite smooth. I have had some problems with not being able to go past a certain point without it reseting my location, and other stuff of that nature. I have had no problems with choppy graphics to a noticable degree.

Good luck with your problem. If you ever get it to run smoothly, we should play sometime. I'm a level 4 female Ranger named Mars December. I'm a noob, but hopefully I'll get better soon.

Hey how do you guys like Guildwars?

I dunno I havent bought the retail version yet, but played Beta for a little while -- it just feels slightly... "disjointed". I dunno I almost would describe it as an "alpha" version of WoW... heh Any thoughts on the game? Is the retail copy comparable to WoW?

    just wondering...

    cheers,

    yass

I think I found the problem, and it is the heat. When I put the laptop on a AC vent it runs fine. I guess I'm going to have to check the fans, and check for dust.

I like GuildWars so far. I don't know how to compare it WOW, cause I've played WOW for a whole 2 minutes.

By the way my char's name is Dr Beef (lvl 5, elementalist).
I'm going to see if I can find you. I'm not to familiar with the game yet.

That's good that you found the problem. My sister had a faulty fan in her zv5000, and just about a week ago something went bad with the harddrive and she had to send it in.

I am not familiar with the game either. I've just been wandering around trying to level up and find some better stuff.

    Mars December - Level 4 - Ranger

I got the name from mixing The Mars Volta with The Decemberists.

Does it matter which server you are on? I was never prompted to choose one, so I assume that you can play on all of them, unless there is only one.

Maybe it does... that's what I was asking.

That seems like it would be a bad system, like if you get the game so you could play with your friends.

Hmm.. Haven't really thought about the servers problem. I'll have to look into it.

youre basically all on the same server. if you want to find a friend, etc then make sure you guys both go to the same city (i.e. Ascalon City) and then make sure you guys are in the same district (to change district , look to the top left corner and scroll down).

btw, i just got the game 3 days ago so im still learning. ive got a lvl 12 Warrior/Necro.

Wow, lvl 12? you've really been playing. I'm still lvl 7, but then again I've been playing erratically.

I don't play very often and I'm only level 5. It takes so long to get enough experience to level up. I can't figure out how to do the quests to get experience either.

It's tricky. For some reason or another, I'm having a very difficult time with this game.

I seriously don't think it will run well on any integrated vid card. It lags at ceratain points for me, though I suspect its my connection speed. I think the requiremtns are a 32meg dedicated card, but not sure. I'll check.

I just got GW and it runs great. Really fun game.

Only problem I have is that when I close the game, my i9300 crashes and goes into a Blue Screen of Death before rebooting.

Any ideas why this would be happening?

That sounds really weird. My comp hasn't had that problem. However, the 2nd time I ever turned on the computer, I got a blue screen of death. I hadn't even done anything to change the computer since I got it!

Find me if you want. I'm lvl 13 R/Me name Panther Storm.

It will, my friend has a Dell inspiron 1200 with the intel crap graphics and if you put it on the lowest settings (which hardly makes ANY difference exept u dont see like little stupid things that u prolly wouldent notice anyways) it works very well, exept when your in towns it lags a little bit but its acceptable. GUILD WARS IS GREAT!!!!!. BUY IT!!!. You will not be disapointed and the lag isnt bad at all. Just remember when u go into options and put the little slider all the way to fastest, go to advanced and set the texture from medium to low and that will reduce lag to almost nothing.

Edit: I also forgot to add lower the resolution to the lowest full screen resolution and that also makes it alot less laggy with hardly any noticable differences.

I have bad issues... I have an Intel 82845 Graphics Controller and I was just playing Guild Wars, and I went to sell a item and it was succesfully sold, but when i tried to sell another item (the same thing) my comp froze momentarily and when it unfroze the resolution changed to 640x480 with a color quality of 4bit and I also got a message that said:

This isn't the first time Guild wars has done this, but usually it gives me the Blue Screen of Death and says a bunch of stuff and eventually says something similar to that. What is wrong and how can it be fixed? I have a Dell Dimension 2350 (desktop, not a laptop). I figured you guys if anyone could help me because there are already alot of people here going through similar problems. If my Intel 82845 Graphics Controller is onboard, what do I do? Buy a new mother board and Graphics Controller? And is my Graphics Controller the same as a Graphics Card?

When i play guild wars for 10-15 mins, my computer restarts and shows this error message:
    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0xBFF80BF, 0xB9D51C00,
    0x00000000)

It has been doing this for about 2 weeks. I hav all the requirements that you need and I read all the ways to fix the common problems in guild wars. Please help me out so I can continue playing it.

    Thanks,
    gwgamer123

Does it say anything after the numbers?

From doing a quick search on the web, its either a bad graphics driver or memory problem. I would uninstall the graphics driver and download and install the latest version.
