wait till morrowind oblivion comes out dude we will all need 6800 ultras somehow jammed into our laptops to run that bad boy but atm i rekon guild wars
-
oblivion will rule the rpg world but i agree that the best at the moment is guild wars plus theres no monthly subscription like in world of warcraft
-
Many complain about GW not being a true MMO, but for me, not being a true MMO removes many of the MMO annoyances.
And, without the P2P fees, it makes it the perfect game for the casual gamer.
Cheers.

I have to go for Guild Wars, cause I own it. Also the no monthly fees sold me. But the down side is that they will release expansions more often than games with monthly fees (to help cover the costs).
-
Definately Guild Wars. I don't play RPGs, and generally I detest MMOGs, but I'm actually considering buying this one. Why? Because I know some people who like it, and for once no one's trying to suck your bank account dry to let you play it.
[rant]On the topic of MMOs...$15+ a month to play a game you've already paid $50 for, that's nothing short of a scam...and don't give me this "the company has to pay to maintain the servers" crap; CS:S, FarCry, Battlefield - all of those games have several large, dedicated servers maintained by the producers that you don't have to pay to play on. Even assuming your moeny is needed to help cover the cost of the servers, given the number of people who buy these games (and the absurdly low quality of the servers in some cases...try going into an area with more than 10 players in it in WoW, and it lags like you wouldn't believe even on top-end computers with cable internet), these servers can't cost but a few bucks per person per year to maintain, not $15 a month. And then there's no single player or otherwise non-MMO element to any of them, so what was the $50 you paid for the game for? Absolutely nothing! Gah, not even Microsoft products are this much of a boondoggle.[/rant] -

what do you mean? anyway have you seen the screen shots they look mental
ps i definatly agree with lowlymarine, brilliant rant. cos its so very very true. -
Marine,
Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think you realize the costs involved in running a MMORPG.
WoW has 2 million subscribers. That's hundreds of servers. You can't compare a dynamic world of a MMORPG with a static, FPS server that BF2, UT or Quake runs on.
You can run a Quake or UT server at home, that tells you something.
There are server pharms, backup and UPS/Facility costs, bandwidth costs, hardware upkeep costs, staffing costs, GM costs (in game helpers) and most important of all, development costs. These games don't pop out and go untouched for months with no patches, added content, dungeons, etc.
This is all development time. This is also spent on fixing bugs, balancing the game, keeping it hack and cheat free and more.
Gaming companies are a business, out to make money. In a game of this size, that stores your characters and their progress and items indefinitely, it costs them....A LOT. To think it doesn't is just very naive and you can't compare a MMORPG with a little FPS server.
To the original poster, I find WoW a great game and it runs great on my XPS Gen 1, but GW is good too, if you don't want to pay a monthly fee.
I'd also like to add that $15 a month less money than you'd spend going to the movies, eating lunch out 3 times a week or going to a bar 1 day a month. -
This is tough to do, but I'd have to suggest WoW, even though I havne't played it much. I was not pleased with Guild Wars as much as I was hoping. Nobody ever played with me so it was hard to get into. That may be more of a problem with me, not the game.
Guild Wars is fun if you can get into it. I enjoyed it for a while, but eventually just stopped playing.
If you don't want to play for online fees, GW is the way to go, but if you are going to pay, pay Blizzard.
This makes me want to install Diablo II, GW, and Half Life 2 again. -
Play WOW and come to Mannorth server LOL.
I agree monthly fees are PITA, but hey, the game is fun, and is more like a MMOARPG than just RPG (A stands for Action).
If you pay 6 months, it saves 2$ a month lol. -
50.... cents.... A...... DAY..... :budget:
Unlimited time on these MMORPG servers for 50 cents a day gentlemen and ladies. Stop being tight asses. Eat out one less night than you normally do and PRESTO!
Lowly marine, I hope you realize that entertainment companies such as blizzard or Sony lose millions the first year (and probably second year) trying to recoup from the salaries of designers to the time it took to develope the game. Not to mention the added servers upon day one which cost a huge amount! As more people join, the cost per person decreases only a tiny bit because they have to keep adding servers. If you think 50 cents a day is a scam for endless hours of pleasure, just realize that juicy steak you ate at that last restaurant cost you 15 to 20 dollars which can be made for less than 2. That is a scam... -
-
i think that you should pay for the number of hours that you play rather than monthly
-
Ok, here it is, some of the main reasons why MMORPGs are pay to play:
1. the game changes every month, and not just bug fixes like other games actual content is added. Think of it like paying for a mini expansion pack every month.
2. the servers and other hardware costs to run these games is huge compaired to other games. Games like Quake or other FPS games do not even touch the hardware costs that MMORPGs need. Not only do these servers have to store game files, but they also store your characters and items. That all takes space.
3. There is in-game support. That takes paying of wages. I have yet to see a FPS game with Game Masters. (I don't think I would want to be a GM in a FPS game, I could just imagine the complaints you would get)
4. MMORPGs are much more cheat proof, now yes there is the occasional cheat in them yet, but when the developers are made aware of the cheat, they fix it. In other games they do not fix it, now there are some games that try to detect cheaters (PunkBuster) But there are ways around that.
Now, these are just the major reasons I choose to play a MMORPG, but that is my personal preforance.
As to the question that the poster asks. I have both Guild Wars and WoW. I like WoW ALOT better. -
you don't have game masters, but you do have admins for each server and they can take care of pretty much any trouble, they can mute people, ban them kick them slay them or injure them. And you can choose a server to play on that has admins and players that are with your style of play and if worst comes to worst you can start your own clan/server and split the cost of that if you have to have control

.... haha and having a social life? -
Good Ole' Diablo 2....
I was planning to get WoW, but 1. My current setup can't handle WC3 well, let alone WoW, and 2. Must focus on school!!! -
I'm Diabloless, and I will be for a while.
Diablo is such a good game. I always end up quiting by the time I get a decent character with good equipment. -

If you must choose, then i recommend aganist WOW. My roommate plays it extensively since day one, and it just looks damn boring from my end. especially effects. For these types of games, visual impressivess is vital, I don't want to sit down for several hours and play if all of the spells i cast are whimpy looking... unfortuneately they are in WOW. watching my roommate cast shadowbolt several times, or even summoning an inferno just isn't that impressive looking. If you want to see spells / effects done right, take a look at the final fantasy series (the later ones).
Honestly, I would rather get Half Life 2 or Unreal Tournament. Those games, you don't need several hours to several days of straight character building to have some fun. I can quickly jump into a game between classes or after work and just play for 10 minutes, and it'll still be great fun. -
I have both WoW and GW. I played WoW for months, probably 5 or 6. I hit lvl 55 but due to my class, I became bored and hit guild wars. Guild wars visuals are stunning, but the gameplay isn't all that great IMHO. You have to be grouped to do well... practically everything, and if you dont have friends you can play with, it get get annoying playing with people you dont know.
So, basically, I thought WoW was much better. But GW had its perks. -
I have played both GW and WOW, and personally I enjoy GW a lot more, however it is really hard to do a direct comparison because they have different styles. WOW has those crazy jobs you can do while GW is more like Diablo style. Shockwave is right though to get the full experiance from guild wars you have to team up with your friends and play together. I will stick with GW but my brother loves WOW, it is all just a matter of preferance.
Guild wars, everquest II, or World of Warcraft
