I've been willing to play Guitar Hero on my laptop.

I read somewhere that the PS3 controller-guitar should work on Windows with no tweaking needed... can anyone confirm?

what is my best choice for the controller? PC version, PS3, PS2, Xbox versions?

I also found this game called Frets on Fire, with millions of songs to download. Can I use any kind of guitar-controller with this game?

(The game seems legal, if I am wrong, let me know and I will erase that part of the post)

AFAIK you can only use the keyboard with Frets on Fire, but it's been quite a long time since I've played it so maybe things have changed.

I would give rhythm zone a look at... its very simular to frets on fire but it does the charts automatically and 99% accurate in most cases...

    Rhythm Zone on Steam

I borrowed a USB guitar from a friend, and it works on a FoF mod, but I can't seem to be able to choose difficulty... all songs are waaay too hard...

Also, original , non-modded FoF won't work. When I run the .exe, just displays a blank red screen and quits to desktop. Maybe its not compatible with Win 7 64?

I googled and found people with the same issue, but no fixes.

I tried it, but in that one you don't have to strum, just press the frets... and there is absolutely no sound difference in hitting the notes or not... you always hear the song correctly... thats no fun at all..

Use Fofix, it's a Frets on Fire mod that adds support for drums and several other improvements...
Any PS3, Xbox, Wii instrument will work instantly, 100% plug and play (i use this)... I play Fofix in Windows 7 and Ubuntu without any problems... You can even apply skins from GH and RB which is really cool... You can find all the skins, songs, etc, here...
Also, a simple google search will give you tons of sites where you can find all the songs released for the GH and RB series...

    hi, thanks for the reply.

I tried FoFix, and got it to work, however I can't seem to be able to choose difficulty for songs.

I choose my song, then when it says: "Choose part and difficulty", I can't change anything, and just goes ahead to the song itself.

I've downloaded many songs, and all of them are extremely difficult... I fail within seconds (and I can manage to get over 70% on Hard difficulty in GH)...

Well that's because the songs you've downloaded only have 1 difficulty... The best songs are the officials (the ones from the GH and RB series) because they have all the difficulties... Check this... there you have all the songs released for those 2 games... Or here, a list of a bunch of songs from the 2 series.. For more songs, google is your friend ;)...

I did download songs with multiple difficulties, I actually see the high score slots for all available difficulties, but I still can't choose...

But I'll check with those links, thanks! +1

I already have World Tour for PC, but google says I can't add songs to that one... I might grab a copy of GH2 in that case...

turns out its a specific issue with Win 7 SP1... I guess I should wait for a new FoF version...

I think there's no point in playing the original FoF when FoFix is better... Just my 2 cents ;)

I downloaded GH song packs. They show in FoFix with all difficulties. But when I choose the song, it says "choose part and difficulty" and then I am not allowed to choose anything!

I don't see any cursor or icon to choose, and all I can do is press "next", to start on expert...

Umm that's really weird... While using the default skin i go quickplay/drums/player1/song/ and then i can choose the difficulty (with the arrow keys if i'm using the keyboard)...

    P.S: i don't see the "choose part" thing... :S

I don't see a part to choose either, maybe its only allowed on songs which have "parts" set, but the message still states "choose part and difficulty"...

I wanted to make FoF work, to see if there I can chose Easy or Medium... but no luck with Win7 SP1...

--> I might post some screens tonight...

mmhhh strange, I dont get that... just the "select difficulty", but no choices show up.

    I'm on FoFix v4.---something....

anyway, I'll wait for a FoF version compatible with W7 SP1, and in the meantime get entertained with official Guitar Hero.
