    Hello Guys!

I think the HD 8990M come out this year!

When it´s based on the new HD 8870 hainan pro chip it will be for sure much faster than the GTX 780M :D

    28nm GCN 2.0
    24 CUs
    1536 SPs
    96 TMUs
    32 ROPs
    2 GB GDDR5
    256 Bit
    GPU 1100 MHz
    Memory 3000 MHz
    TDP 160 Watt

40% faster then Desktop HD 7870!

So if the HD 8990M is based on this chip and slightly lower clocked it´s amazing :D

They don't even talk about Mobile cards, so all you have is hearsay.

I don't think we'll see an 8990m any time soon.

Ummm, what? We're talking about two GPUs that exactly zero official details have been released regarding. How do you have any idea which one is going to be more powerful, assuming either of them even get released?

Let me add some context to what dimotion is trying to say.

    -----

Recent rumors suggest that AMD went in to full panic when they saw what the new 700 series from Nvidia could do (beat 7970Ghz by 25%). Their schedule was to wait until Q4 before releasing "Volcanic Islands", their new architecture. Since the market determine when they release stuff, their plan was changed. Now the plan is Q3 instead for their upcoming new architecture thanks to 700 series.
It will still be based on 28nm like Sweclockers earlier suggested.

Here are the new 8000 series cards:

We all know 7970M = 7870, so I took the liberty to write down a comparison between 7970M and 8990M. 256 more stream processors and new architecture. This might be interesting.

Remains to be seen if this is true though.

I doubt they panicked, considering they released their line way before nvidia and had released since. If anything, the small increase in performance might push them to make a small increase too.

That's too bad. 780 should have been the titan full, and AMD should have fought back with something on the same level, to drive prices lower and performance higher!

The 8870 seems like it would be rather similar performance-wise to an overclocked Tahiti LE chip, which is just a cut down Tahiti core (e.g. the 7870 jokercard, but it has the same amount of shaders, ROPs and TMUs as the purported 8870.

Tahiti LE ended up around 8% faster than a regular 7870, but the rumored 8870 has its core clocked quite a bit higher (1100mhz vs 925mhz) and same vram speed. Assuming perfect scaling, the 8870 should end up around 30% faster than the 7870. Obviously nothing scales perfectly, but the 8870 should also be using a faster, updated GCN architecture so I figure it more or less evens out.

any chance for 8990m to have 1792 core with 256 bit interface and core clock at 900?

More likely 1536 cores and a clock of ~800.

Besides, it's not even real yet, or maybe ever. Some rumours suggest that the next thing we'll see is the 9970m in the fall. Others suggest ATI is too busy to bother with the Xbox One and PS4.

It is all smoke and mirrors and Public Relations at the moment from two companies talking about two products that haven't been released yet. Keep your enthusiasm under control and lets wait (impatiently :D ) until they are released.

Needs 4GB of VRAM to be at all attractive.

not that needed for 1080p resolution. E.g. Metro last light, tomb raider, grid, crysis on max don't use more than 1100-1500mb of video memory) to be future proof? may be, but than we need much more powerful architecture

8970m has 4GB ram anyway, i think it'a no-brainer that 8990m or superior releases will have the same.

I think if they launch a 8990 it will beat the 780M, if not then I geuss the 9000M series is gonna do it.
Time will tell, now Nvidia has the ball of the faster videocard.
Still I think the difference ain't that big, for me next generation is new baking process aka smaller nm.
    That would make big increases.

780M is more a 680M on steroids, it's nothing new, just a nice bit faster.
same for AMD 8970M is a 7970M on some smaller steroids lol :p.

This new generation (it's not really) is more to keep the sales up.

680M > 780M is not even remotely comparable to 7970M>8970M.

8970M is a slightly overclocked 7970M. Same GPU.
GTX 780M got more cores and desktop memory with a lot higher memory clock.

Nvidia delivered, AMD have not (yet)

Nvidia always have the faster card. At a considerably higher price point usually though. AMD are currently re-releasing the 7970M for now as they are still probably developing their next card. A paper release as it were to stall for time.

Those with deep pockets and short patience will run to the 780M. It is a great card. Those on a smaller budget will wait.

Maybe, maybe not if either is better than one another it won't be by much but we all win, AMD and nVidia fans should rejoice wih this much power.

What I said cloudfire, 780M is a 680M on steroids.
It has nothing new, nothing better, just some more transistors..... and new memory..

8970M is also nothing, even less then what Nvidia made, it's just a a 7970M with no optimizations @ all.
This year performance wise is the worst in a long time.

Intel introduces nothing new, the new Mobile cpu's go from 45/55 to 47/57 watts what gives what? nothing?
A better GPU we don't use because we like to game with our 680M or whatever.
and the CPU itself is the same as a Ivy-bridge, it's all been about the on-die video this year.

This year is one of the worst years to upgrade your stuff, the performance gains are very very very low in all segments.

If you plan to upgrade reconsider and bring your money to next year (talking about laptops).

I wait for the next highend card from amd!!!
