I am choosing between a vaio fw and hdx16t. both have everything identical hardware other than the graphics card.

    which one is better-

ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD4650 graphics card with 512MB vRAM (VAIO)

    or

512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT (HP HDX)

    thanks.

ps. i do video editing and a bit of programming along with basic tasks like word processing, browsing, music, etc. is upgrading to a 7200rpm hdd worth it for 30$?

The 4650 is better and the faster hdd is worth it imo.

It depends on GPU memory type. HD 4650 GDDR3 > 9600M GT GDDR3 > HD 4650 DDR2 > 9600M GT DDR2. So if the systems have a 9600M GT GDDR3 and HD 4650 DDR2 , the 9600M GT GDDR3 system would be better. I believe they both have GDDR3, so the Sony would still be better.

You sure about that? Sony uses GDDR3(or DDR3) HD4650s in their Vaio FWs(least in the North American and European versions). Don't get confused with system RAM(which is DDR2).

HP does generally use DDR2 GPUs though.

Heard the HDX used GDDR3 too... either way HD 4650 is better.

Just thought I would add, if your customizing the HP, you can downgrade the ram from 8 to 4(saves 400$, still have 1 more gb than the Sony), upgrade the processor to 2.53 Ghz p8700(sony has 2.23), free 7200 rpm hard drive(sony 5400), display on the Sony is 13 inch 1280x800, while the hp is 16 inch with a free upgrade to 1920x1080-

And for 100 extra $ you can upgrade the 9600m to a 130m(idk if its that much better?)

Edit: I noticed also hp sells the DX18 where you can get the same dx16, same stats/price but has a 18.4 inch display and ddr3geforce 130m and 8-cell battery instead of 6 its all special deals though so i dunno how long itll be that low....

HP lappies come with DDR2 GPUs.
My housemate have HDX16 too, he was using 9600M GT. This card really hot. =.=! The 9600M GT in his laptop was 90C during intense gaming before I help him undervolt his CPU(not GPU). After I undervolt the CPU, overall temperature got lowered down and the GPU only have 85C during intense gaming. While the CPU(intense gaming) drop from 80C-->70C. Even the temperature got lowered but still considered high. Because of crazy temperature, he can't overclock and got beaten by my OCed 9500M GS(75C max temp).
I think ATi's will be lower in temperature and better in performance. Yet, I can't confirm about it. You need to ask or try it though. LOL.
Conclusion, ATI HD 4650 > Nvidia 9600M GT.

The HD 4650 is definitely better! I use a lot of different Vaio accessories and it's great!
