Hi everyone,
I am experiencing some kind of graphic glitches, if I may call it like that, with my 5870. For some reason, even though I'm running the game flawlessly at max settings, etc, I'm seeing some "squares" or "lines" that are quite depleasing since it's a lot less pleasant to the eye.
Here's an example in The Witcher - enhanced edition :
Here's a screenshot taken from google image search : http://img.jeuxvideo.fr/00572235-photo-the-witcher.jpg (pretty, right ?) Everything is really smooth, not much to say about this.
Now, here's my screenshot : Imageshack - witcher2010062818554285.jpg Now widen it up and look closely around the eyes, and the nose (this is where you can see it best). See how it gets pixellised ? This is what I'm not understanding. And even though it doesn't seem that obvious on a picture, playing the game with it does make quite a difference.
I have already tried uninstalling ccc, cleaning with ccleaner/driver sweeper. I also tried various ccc settings, like, in the 3D tab, setting personalized values, letting applications handle the settings, or letting ccc decide... didn't find a way to prevent this so far.
Here's another example of this, still as annoying, yet quite different.
Gothic III, no shadow effects : Imageshack - gothic32010062821200396.jpg
Imageshack - gothic32010062821223839.jpg
Gothic III, with the highest "quality" shadow effects now :
Imageshack - gothic32010062821272860.jpg
Imageshack - gothic32010062821273385.jpg
Imageshack - gothic32010062821273937.jpg
Now, if you call this "pretty" light effects... then bite me !! I know there are a lot of things that run wrong with gothic III though, so it could be a completely different issue... Anyways, any idea in order to fix both these issues would be very much appreciated![]()

Dude, there are so many screenshots with tons of post processing. You can find them for Morrowind, Oblivion, The Witcher. And these post processed screenshots look nothing close to in game.
The only way to tell is if you actually take a screenshot of the same exact scene with a different computer and then do with the HD5870 and then compare. -
Ok but still, the issue in gothic III is still there. I'll get a friend to take screenshots of The Witcher on his pc to see if there's a difference.
Edit : or if anyone has it, with a different computer, trying to take a screenshot so I could compare would be much appreciated too ! That friend I'm talking about has a G73 with 5870 too so if the issue is here, there won't be much of a differenceI'm rather curious to see how it turns out with an NVidia GPU.

The Witcher just looks like you need to turn on AAA in order to remove the jaggies, which is common.. It's not a graphical distortion, it's because the screen resolution is low. To correct this, you can turn on AAA which removes these jaggies. you take a performance hit when you turn this on, higher levels affect performance more, so start low and work your way up until the FPS drop too low for your liking.
The gothic III distortions look like AAA or AF is being forced when it shouldn't be, try setting these to application controlled or even off in CCC. -
1440*900 is low ? I'll try to change ccc settings again, but AA is turned on in the witcher settings (at 4x which is the max).
Also, that gothic 3 screenshot was taken with ccc uninstalled. -
On Witcher, probably it's due to the game not having a V-sync feature. Try forcing V-sync to ON on your CCC settings. I have that same problem on my desktop with nVidia 8800 GT SLI mode.
On Gothic 3, it looks like a graphic glitch like what you've said. Try updating your ATI drivers or Gothic 3 itself. -
-
Just tried forcing Vsync on in my CCC settings, didn't see much of a difference, if any.
For Gothic 3, it is up to date (1.7 player's patch) and my ati drivers are as well (10.6 catalyst)
Here's my current ccc settings : http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/2695/92225364.jpg -
did this happen with 10.5s?
-
Never had it, I don't really see the point in downgrading either :S
-
Default your Catalyst Control Center 3d settings, if they're set to performance, your mipmaps quality will be a big blur,
Play at your native resolution, tends to help,
Update your driver set, if they Medions own, they're obviously MSI's
Other then that, my Xbox suffers from the same thing, i dont know why, but i dont think its hardware problems. -
Still getting the same "shadows" in gothic 3 after defaulting ccc to factory settings and setting the game in native resolution :S
I was already playing The Witcher at native resolution. -
I also have the witcher. Tris isn't render well both on my desktop and my laptop. Everything else renders beautifully.
-
That blockiness is in the Witcher no matter which card you use. I got that on my old X1900, a 8800m and now the 5870. It's an engine issue.
-
Try uninstalling ccc, and continue with the cleaning of ccleaner/driver sweeper.
Let me know what happens.

@JohnnyFlash and ryukenden : you guys have The Witcher Enhanced Edition ? Or just normal edition ?
@ryukenden : It's not only triss, I uploaded her only but it happens with all the other ones. But like johnnyFlash said, it's probably just an engine issue then !
However, I still haven't find a workaround for my Gothic III issue :S -
-
NWN2 ? I'm talking about TWEE
But I definitely want to try out NWN2 some time.
-
-
Oh, my bad then, I had no idea !
-
Secondly, my card is much weaker than most of the other posters but I don't have any rendering problems with my card. AA for me is actually locked at 2x and I remember previous articles mentioning this as a safety limitation. -
Also I used the TWEE with the latest patch and director cut installed
. AA setting on 4x max settings. Its definitely the graphic engine. One thing to note, I can't zoom in without changing views to first person. Its probably do to high resolution.

Gothic 3:
Download this Community Patch and turn on the ATI series 5 fix during the installation.
World of Gothic
Here is their forum thread on the patch.
Community Patch 1.74 - World of Players
I had the same thing until I patched it to Community Patch 1.74 -
However, at the moment even at lower settings gothic 3 is not really playable because of the constant load. I don't know if this patch will fix it, or if only an ssd would make the game run more fluently.... But I guess I will find out tonight. -
Alright, thanks a lot ulster, definitely fixed my shadow problem and game is also a lot less laggy now.
Well, it is still laggy, but who can say he plays gothic 3 with no lag? ^^ -
No problem Dante. Make sure you are using the 1.74 Community patch.
It fixes tons of problems. Then..
Goto gothic 3\Ini
Backup your Ge3.ini
Download mine here at the end of the post...
Then try these settings.
Vegetation quality to Low
Textures MAX
Objects low detail
Draw distance to High
Texture filters 4X
Resource Cache Optimal
Lens Flare off
Over-glow Bloom
Rim Lighting On
AA Edge Smoothing 2x
Soft Water On
Screen Noise Off
Deedback Effect Off
rest on HIGH
Tell me how that works for you. It will still lag on new area loads.. The game Engine is a bit laggy.Attached Files:

Is 1400x900 your native resolution because if it isnt run the game at your native resolution. The pixellation could also just be becasue the game does not have amazing graphics.
-
Yes, 1440x900 is my native resolution.
@Ulster : Ok I will try this but the lag is not really due to graphical performance, like you said it's when I load new areas. After slowly looking 360° around, so that everything is loaded, game runs fluently at 60fps ^^
But I will try anyways -
I don't know what you did to your ge3.ini, but 5minutes of gothic 3 ate up 3gb of ram, while usually it only takes 2 and after a little while. No noticeable difference in lag either =/ But thanks I will stay like this it's ok.
-
Opps I set it to allow more than 2Gb of RAM because I have 8 GB.
Any way the lag issues are with the sliders.
If you set them like I wrote it should be alot smother.
It's just a laggy game.
HD5870 - poor graphics ?
