I have an Alienware M17x with a HD6990m
I'm sure what I'm doing is within the safe zone, I overclocked it to 820/1100. After tests it's stable...BUT, this is going to be really stupid, the clock speed doesn't go back down as in when the the gpu has 0% load the clock stays @ 820/1100. Is there a way to change it so it automatically changes the clock when it's not under heavy usage? It's just that the card idles @ like 65 degrees when it normally idles around 50. Btw I used TRIXX to OC it and furmark and battlefield 3 to test it.

I don't actually know how to use that program, but if you can set up profiles, just keep TRIXX open (does it have a tray icon?) and switch to your OC'd profile when you want to play a game. If not, try MSI Afterburner, it's got both profiles and a nice tray icon to switch between them in seconds.

Thanks for commenting, I've tried MSI afterburner, same "issue". The clock rate stays @whatever i set it to no matter the GPU usage. Is this common in all overclocking or it's just me?

In addition, if I don't overclock when the system is idle the gpu is @ 150/150, so it's barely running. Now it's always @800/1000 and the temp won't go down. I was wondering is there a software that only changes the max clocks but it doesn't toggle the clocks after overclocking it.

Did you enable the test overclocking mode below the EULA in the config file of afterburner? If not then do so.

hmmm, im using TRIXX too (which is amazing by the way!)
I too overclock to 820/1100...but even when overclocked, on idle it goes back to 100/150
After I finish playing, I hit Reset > Apply in TRIXX (try to do that)
By the way, im on official 12.3 Drivers... -
I actually have a problem with mine after I sent it into RMA and they replaced the screen. When I got it back it is stuck on 250/900 when it clocks down because it thinks I have external screen connected when I dont. Have tried everything from reinstalling to flashing to removing the card and screen and nothing has fixed it.
Not wanting to send it in for RMA I simply setup CCC hotkeys so that when I hit Ctrl O it turns powerplay off and drops the clocks to 100/150 and Ctrl P turns is back on and it goes back to high performance. I actually like this way more because gadgets and things that dont require the GPU would cause it to clock to high performance especially when I was browsing too and turn the fan on, when you setup hotkeys for powerplay you can force it to stay at 100/150 keeping the fan off. -

otherwise I will keep using the hotkeys I only use it for gaming really anyway.
