    HI everyone,

My brother-in-law just bought an Acer 5672 Wlmi with ati x 1400, and I just installed the game Call of Duty 2.

But it seems that i can´t play it on direct x 9.
Even at this specs (wich are the minimum) i can´t get more then 15 fps:
    - no antializing.
    - 800x600
    - no shadows
    - no lights
    - Ac adapter (maximum settings for cpu performance)

If i switch to directx 7, I can play it at MAXIMUM with no lag at alll.

Is it normal??? Is it the ati driver , wich seems to be ati catalyst 6.14???

Try updating the drivers, i think official drivers are at 6.8 and omega (tweaked) drivers are at 6.7.

It wouldn't be 6.14 as that hasn't been made yet. 6.14 is probably the prefix numbers, my 2d driver is 6.14.10.6601 which I think is catalsyt 6.3 drivers.

    http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

Use this link. Update the drivers and install DX9c. Try that, and if it doesnt work try omega. Since you dont have the x1600 version(ati x1600s are notorious for issues with omega drivers) I will recomend omega, as they seem to work alot better then the catalyst for other cards.

Call of Duty 2 is extremely demanding, even the higher-end video cards have trouble handling it. It may not be playable in DX9 mode for you.

I'd suggest using it on DX7 mode because as you found, you can run it on max. There is no pixel shading or shadows (well, if you count the dark blob under the guy...), hence it is very easy to handle.

Edit: Also downlad the Call of Duty 2 Intel Dual-Core Hyper-Thread Optimization Patch:
    http://www.callofduty.com/patch/
It will enable the game to take advantage of the power of the Core Duo, you should see signifigant performance gains.

What backing do you have to say that the x1600 graphic cards in the 5672wlmi have been having problems? Is that simply with a restore DVD install of windows vs. a clean install or just user problems getting games to work and run properly.

I guess I just don't see the validiity of that statement.

I have the backing to say that mine didnt work well with omega drivers. I didnt say 5672 x1600s only had the issue, but that all makes and models of the x1600 seem to have issues. Mine gave me an error and dropped my 3dmark score. SO I can say that MY x1600 didnt work well with omega and youll also read several others having issues with the omegas and x1600 laptop cards.

Sorry if this is a noob question... but how do you play a game in earlier versions of DirectX? (i.e. switching from DX9 to DX7)

Most games will only play according to the tech level of your graphics card. ie. If you have a Ti4200 then Doom 3 will play at DX8 level. Some games will let you change what pixel shader version you can use such as Half Life 2 or CoD2, through the options menu. Some others you might be able to change via changing the game config menu.

    Hi Chaz,

But shouldn´t I get at least 30 fps in the bare minimum??????? What´s intriguing me is that it is not playable in any low minimun possible setting.
Come on, no shadows, no anti, no aniso, no lights, 800x600......
It´s seems weird... Cause in dx 7 i play in 1280x800, shadows on lightson anti 4x, everything oin max nad it runs perfect.

The diference is just toooooo big. I don´t expect to play call of duty in maximum... i know the limitations of the card... but AT LEAST in minimum i should be able to play it... I was expecting it to play in low-mid level. maybe
30 fps in medium (1024x768 / 4x) with no shadows and light.......

I will try to update the driver this week and see what happens.

I found it a little odd myself. You should at least be able to play under DX9. Try installing that dual-core patch and see if it does anything - it should definitely help.

Make sure AA is disabled in the video card's control panel as well as in the in-game options. And check to see that the power settings are on maximum for when you are plugged into AC.

I had disableded everything in the card tooo not just in the game. I improved from 10 to 15 (i am guessing) put still hard to play. in some scenes impossible.

Yes, it´s on ac power and in maximum performance on the settings for power....

I played doom 3 in my desktop with Fx 5200!!! lol ! in the bare minimum at 15 fps 800x600. I realy should play Call of duty in this ATi x1400 ....... i will put the new catalyst this week and i will see what happens.

Thanks, Chaz and all advices guys.

I have an acer too. Aspire 1692 with an x700 with only 64 MB. To play well in multiplayer I had to put it at 800*600 without lights, etc.. So I play with a range of 50 - 25 fps, depends the situation. But all the textures are poor.
Acer is a bad solution for gaming.

it has to be in directx 7 mode. there is no way ati 9700 can play cod2 in directx 9 mode all high.

isk, the 4 pipelines choke on the additional texture layers for the character and terrain texture maps (normal maps, shaders).

Pulsar, the 9800xt is a power house, using even newer and faster processes then the original power house 9800pro had. I can see the XT doing dx9 and 1024. My 9600xt wich is about that of a 9700 was playing cod2 at 800x600 in DX9 mode (only really needed to disable shadows.. those really kill the video card).

I wouldn't even try playing that on the x1400... It's only got 4 pipes. You want at least 12 these days.
