If only my sister hadn't called me and i'd continued watching dvd (using wmp), smoke would've been appeared from my acer. I was watching dvd for, like, 20 mnts when my sister called. Then closed wmp and saw my everest windows sidebar showing 102C in gpu temp. I'm using this 180.84 dox optimized driver, and since then my idle gpu temp is 65C and the gpu clocks stuck at low performance 3d (medium level), while it should've been standard 2d (50C). Weeks ago i tried to install nvidia driver (179.xx) by, first, uninstalling this current driver. But i found that my gpu clocks still stuck at medium and my gpu slider (in acer settings) is still gone...i wonder what will happen if i play COD...should i go back to pinball and solitaire.. lol
add. info: now is winter and i hardly ever use heater. So it's like 15C room temp. Put my laptop on wooden table, no nb cooler. But i think that wouldn't make my gpu boils only becoz of watching dvd
any suggestion, guys?

What surface was it on? My 9600m gt idles at 50°C and maxxes out around 90°c gaming ( it never goes over this ).
-
-
That's not uncommon for a 9500M GS/8600M GT (they are the same cards). Mine's idling 74~82 and loading 96~108. I can play 4 hours straight at 105C. I've been doing this for over a year and no problem.
EDIT: Wait, you are on a 18.4''? That's definitely not normal then. -
Hmmm this hot laptop reminded me of a story about an idiot who drilled some 'air holes' underneath the laptop for 'air ventilation' lol
Anyway ... OMG 102 c? thats pretty dangerous .... are you sure its C? not F? lol
Mine idles around 61-66c. Peak at 79c -
anything above 100*c definitely isnt "normal". your air vents could be blocked from the inside due to accumulation of fine dust. check and see...
-
i always use my lap on hard surface where nothing's blocking the vent. i think the problem is the driver. Because why it's stuck at 275/550/200? It was 169/330/100 when i was using 177.xx. This occured after i install dox. I repeatedly repeated clean install process (179.xx) to get rid of this for 3 or 4 times. Still it won't cool off..my idle temp could be 12 - 15C lower if the problem is gone and my gpu would age slower...btw reinstall os is the last thing on my mind. I have too many reason not to do that..

Get a notebook cooler or get an electric fan and point it at your laptop and monitor the temperature again. You can also try changing your laptop's drivers and monitor the temperature again. I also suggest you have your laptop's interior cleaned, have the fans checked, and have a new layer of thermal compound such as Arctic Silver applied on your GPU.
Just for additional info, my laptop idles at around 60C and goes to around 90C when playing games. I expected newer GPUs to actually run cooler. It's probably your drivers or some cooling problem. *Just a note. When my laptop was still new 3 years ago, the GPU idles, if I remember correctly at less than 50C and goes to around 70-80C when playing. Even my CPU before was only around 35-40C when idle. Now 60C is the norm when idle and it reaches 80+C (!!!) when playing. Seems like I need to get mine checked too.* -
Some people have reported that Acer Gemstone Blue thermal sensing is screwed up. Eg. My CPU has been reported to idle below 0 Degrees.
Or you have a faulty GPU. -
LOL @ the below 0 degrees. That's colder than my fridge.

My GPU idles at...
[Of course it's just a bug, I suppose it's because of sleep.]Attached Files:

well, btw i'm going to buy a cryo nzxt cooler, i've heard so many good things bout this tool. But however, my temp could've been cooler, no matter what cooling pad i have, becoz it will always be 15C higher than the one before this issue
-
hot idle (raised my lap just now)

Yours could not beat my 9600M GT's record of 104!
-
your idle temp looks okay to me. my g86 core 8600m gs idles at 59-63c.
-
9600MGT @ 106DegC at just 2 days old!!!!! (returned)
9600MGT @ 85DegC max (now owned) -
:eek
-
Well, not sure exactly, but i recon the heat sink wasnt fitted correctly as idle temps were high (compared to my new one) on both CPU and GPU
-
might be worthwhile to open up the unit and see if thers any dust on the inside of the vents (not visible from outside)
was kind of shocked that my 2 month old laptop had virtually a 3mm dense thick carpet of dust covering the vent....no wonder it had high temps!! -
guys, i should repeat this..that my gpu clocks stay at low performance 3d (medium). That causes the issue, not coz it's dirty, dusty, wrongly placed, or anything amateur like those..
i wish it was that simple, becoz those would be the first thing everybody will do if they have the same problem. And i've done what those u guys said above. The problem is, now, even though i clean install nvidia driver 179.xx, the clocks won't go down to standard 2d (idle)..if i can make the clocks go to idle level, then the temp will follow. It's the clocks... :GEEK:

it has to be the clocks

This is what mine looks like after 5 months of heavy use:

Just films of dust on the blades surface.
Its your powermizer, its being retarded. -
you should see the insides of a computer from a smoker that smokes right beside the desktop case, and having the smoke sucked in the intake fan for 3 years , not a pretty site *l* (my uncle),
was just pure nicotine/dust coated on everything ,ugh. -
my notebook is on 24/7. has been since they day i bought it lol, with the exceptions being when im flying.
i use my notebook on the bed a lot, so it explains the dust.
my room is pretty dusty anyway.. -
-
okay, i've seen the disabling powermizer thread. Anyone know how to enable it? dox driver seems to make disabled-powermizer feature permanent unless we manually edit the registries..this is very important guys.. I don't want any additional drama while watching titanic on my laptop
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Try different drivers. Some driver versions can mess with powermizer, that or try different bios.

Fireeeeeeeeee!!!!!!
-
Dang, that's super hot. Hottest my 9300 has seen is 65.
-
is cleaning my laptop worth voiding the warranty..?
-
Generally you won't void your warranty just by opening up the cover and spraying it with some compressed air. As far as I know most warranties are voided by lifting the heatsink/CPU/GPU, so you should be fine cleaning it out. I'd double check to be sure though.
-
But there is sticker covering the screw locking the cover says opening this will void your warranty..btw is this statement below true?
-
imo, anything above 80 deg C is too much.
-
Wayyy to hot...clean out dust or by yourself a notebook cooler

Wow you should really watch those temperatures!
HOLY COW!! My 9500m gs just reached 102C!!
