Hello guys!
I have bit of a problem with my new HP 8710p laptop wth the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 / 2.2 GHz
2 GB DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz
160 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm
NVIDIA Quadro NVS 320M - dedicated 256 MB VRAM
17.0 WSXGA+ Display (1680 x 1050)
Which should be at bit faster than the one that wore tested by Greg - Exellent review btw!
But still it only delivers 4500 points in 3Dmark 06.
How can that be ?.
In advance, thanks for your help!.
Sorry for my bad english, im not living in an english speaken country, so its not the best
Hope you can live with it!
-
-
why do you think your 8710p underperforms ?
your score in 3dmark06 is actually very good.
if you refer to gregs test you should take a closer look to the test result !
he tested with 3dmark05 !
of course the results from 3dmark05 are way higher than the one´s from 3dmark06.
your result is ok. maybe with another driver you could gain another 200-300 points more. around 4800points the nvs320 should be able to reach. -
Try a different driver. The one you're using might be old.
-
schoko:
I must say this is quite embarrassing!, i quess i confused 3dmark 05 with the 06.
But still, i have seen people with close to the same laptop as me, getting around 5000 points in 3dmark 06 WITHOUT any overclocking.
I just dl´ed the driver from Windows update, which other driver suits my GPU best ? -
you better don´t use the drivers that windows update offers you.
if you want to use a newer driver, you should go to www.laptopvideo2go.com and get one of their latest drivers. you will most likely get more performance with one of the latest drivers from laptopvideo2go. -
I´ve now tryed downloading a couple of drivers, but of some reason, i cant install them!
Im running on a 32-bit vista, but still it says when i try to install it, that my system is NOT a 32-bit vista! -
laptopvideo2go offers the official nvidiadrivers for download. these are not modified. to get the latest drivers working you have to extract the driver. for each driver you will see a modded inf.
you will have to download the modded inf for the corresponding driver and replace the original nv4_disp.inf with the modded one from laptopvideo2go.
after that you can install the driver without problems. -
I will try it.
Should i go with the newest driver, or what will you recommend?
Thanks for your advices btw.
I really appreciate it! -
no problemo, mate
i guess thats what it´s all about here, to search for help when you need it and to give some help when you can. i´ve got to say there are a lot of helpful people at this board, and thats why so many people like it.
concerning your driver :
i do not own an nvidia graphics card, but from what i´ve read in the last weeks, the 169.04 or the 169.09 should be best for you.
//edit
please report back if this did help you, maybe some others will be interested in a benchmark result of the nvs320 with a more recent driver. -
I couldn´t agree more!
I tried 169.09 version, and replaced the inf, with the modded one.
But it still wont work!
When i try to install it, a message appear telling that the OS isn´t Windows vista 32 bit and the instalation quit. -
what´s your os, is it vista 32 ?
have you selected the correct drivers @ laptopvideo2go ?when you are at the downloading section you see the os selection at the left side of the page ? selected the correct one ? -
Yes it is, Vista Business 32-bit
I picked the driver under the vista 32-bit so i really cant see why i wont work? -
actually it should..... strange....
try something else.... but check before that you have the correct driver and the modded .inf for that specific driver.
replace the orginal nv4_disp.inf with the modded one.
-> go to display properties / settings/advanced . there is a tab for the graphics card select that one -> go to the properties -> driver
install the new driver by hand...
you will have to use the have disk method, select a driver yourself..... you will get a little explorer window where you can select the folder with the extracted driver.
after that it should show a driver for your nvs320. select it. reboot after installing the driver , and see if it works. -
It just say the best driver is already installed ?
Should i remove the driver i downloaded from windows update, and how ? -
yes, you could remove it, but don´t need to, you can force windows to use that specific driver you want.
when something goes wrong with the new driver, you can roll back to the driver you have installed now. -
How can i force windows to do that ?
It doens´t allow me to update -
Could there be another step, taking into consideration that he is using a quadro, and not a geforce card?
-
when you have pressed the update button in the graphics card menu, you should get two options :
1.automatic install
2. for advanced users from a certain location / disk
choose second option
after that you should get some options from which you should choose : do not search / choose driver yourself
after that a window opens in which you can choose the have disk or disk -> here you select the the location of the new driver
-> after you have selected the location you get a window where the name of a compatible graphics card from the nv4_disp.inf is shown, in your case quadro nvs320m.
when you select it windows let´s you install this specific driver. maybe you will get a notification that this driver is not tested by microsoft... blabla.... ignore that notification.
now your driver should be installed just fine. reboot, and see if it worked. -
It works!
Its my fault, of some reason i put the driver setup on the desktop!
Wow!, i really feel like and jackass right now!
Sorry guys! -
so great, you´ve got it installed.....
would you like to do some benches and post them here ?
would be nice to see how this card actually performs -
No problem, its just finished installing.
I will do a 3dmark 06 just after rebooting -
My 3dMark06 scores were always about 4400-4500, just FYI.
-
4478 points this time..
No increase at all.
Greg:
The thing that confused me, i followed your steps in the small guide you made in another post to make the GPU act like an 8700m GT.
It is now called 8700m GT instead of NVS 320m in screen properties, but still the 3dmark 06 is not higher at all!
Maybe i should try another driver version ? -
The question is, how does it underperform?
I have the same laptop and it runs pretty much every game (except Crysis of course) at the highest settings... My 3d mark isn't drastically higher then yours (@ cca. 4800-4900), but that is most likely because I am running on XP, and have an optimized system (defragged on every startup, + not many proggies running in the background)...
Are you experiencing some ****ty performances in games, or are you only concerned about some petty 3d mark scores... -
I'm trying to do the same thing, so to replace the original nv4_disp.inf file, can I just search for it, and then replace what I find (which is in C:\Windows\inf)???
Or is the .inf I want to replace the one in folder extracted with the installer??? -
Primitivc:
It runs the most games on high too, and again expect Crysis which btw goes quite well on med.
Pixelot:
The original nv4_dips.inf file is in the folder you extracted.
You should just drag the modded one into it, and you will get a message about replacing it -
Yes, of course... you replace the one that is in the install folder with the "modded" one...
-
will will have to replace the inf file before installing the driver.
if you go over to laptopvideo2go you will find an *.inf modded specifically for each driver version.
just go to their download section, select your os, select the driver version you would like to have, download the driver and the modded nv4_disp.inf.
- extract the driver
- replace the original nv4_disp.inf from your driver with the modded one.
-after that it should install just fine.
good luck

thanks for the rep, pixelot

@ the danish
concerning the different 3dmark06 results for one card with different os´s :
seems that vista is about 200-300 points behind. thats the explanation for your lower score compared to the xp benchmark results. -
schoko:
Sounds reasonable, im getting some good game perfomance,
Which in the end, is what counts -
I ran the installer, which extracted to a folder.
In the folder, I replaced nv_disp.inf with the modded version.
I ran dpinstall.exe, and it said the new driver was ready to use.
I deleted the folder, and went to the C:\drivers\video folder and it looked as if it was indeed the updated driver.
I ran setup.exe, and restarted.
We'll see if I actually did anything???
Oh snap.
Microsoft tried to find the new graphics software and decided to revert to the "Standard VGA driver" because it couldn't find a couple necessary .dlls...now I can't even find my nVida card to roll back the driver!
Should I do a System Restore? -
The one thing that still bothers me.
If it doens´t increase the performane to make the NVS 320m look like 8700m GT, then why all the fuzz and threads about doing it ? -
I'll take that as a YES! Thank God I had System Restore turned on
*shakes in cold sweat at the thought of what would have happened otherwise*
Actually I would just have had to back up all my personal data and "restore my system software to factory condition".
Still, I'm glad I didn't have to.
So here's my question: after I extract the folder and replace the .inf, what exactly do I do?
Do I run dpinst.exe, setup.exe, or none of the above? If so, please specify what....
PLEASE HELP!!! -
// edit
just have seen you´ve edited your post....
you will have to run the setup.exe or use the have disk method i´ve describe earlier in this thread.
to make sure you have the correct driver installed, you need to to do this :
rightclick onto your desktop -> properties-> settings (for the graphics card) -> advanced-Y click the tab graphics card->properties ....
there should be a "driver" tab, in which you can see the version of your driver. -
Yes, I found that. And in the nVidia control panel I can see that my driver version is 156.69. I want to update it to 169.09.
\\edit
Thanks again! I tried the have disk method, but Windows was under impression that the best driver was already installed...
I'll try the setup.exe again!
Hey! It worked! I guess I wasn't supposed to run dpinst.exe, delete the extracted folder, and run setup.exe from where dpinst.exe put it...
Anyway, thanks schoko! Now what I'm wondering is if it's safe to delete that folder now? If not, I'll probably roll back the driver, and repeat the process with the folder in a different location. -
Guys, i need your help again!
I tried some different drivers trying to increase the 3dmark 06 points.
It doens´t helped, at all!
I only got 4000 with the most drivers, i now use the newest driver again, before i got 4500 point, but now its only 4000, with the same driver?!
What is the problem ? -
good question...
sounds like you screwed up your system, or at least the driver installation.
maybe you should uninstall all nvidia related drivers and software for the graphics card.
after that you can try a clean install. -
That will propably be a good idea, but how can i do that ?
-
well, i don´t have a nvidia graphics card, but there should be software and the driver under setttings / software you can uninstall.
-
Under remove programs i can delete all Nvidia drivers permently on my system.
Shall i try that or can it just make it worse ? -
no, you won´t make it worse. you will have to uninstall all drivers and software to clean your system up.
after you uninstalled the driver and the software you will have to reboot.
windows will not have a graphics driver and will use a generic driver !
don´t be afraid when your screen does not look like it should !!
when you are back in windows you can install the latest driver again.
i propose the 169.09 you´ve installed earlier. -
Its back to normal again
4428 points aint bad is it ? -
yup, glad you made it work again...
fyi, there is a difference between every run of the benchmark, meaning, not every run of a benchmark on your system will show exactly the result. -
Peoples !!! this is the situation :
winXP 32bit 3dmark2006 ~4800-4900 pts
winVista 32bit 3dMark2006 ~4450-4500 pts
Conclusion: Preformance +10% under XP -
Notebookcheck has the 8700m GT at a 3DMark 06 average of 4717.
http://nl.notebookcheck.com/NVIDIA-GeForce-8700M-GT.4111.0.html
This basically means that the NVS 320M doesnt underperform based on your results, but actually performs exactly as expected.
I know this was already established in this topic. But I thought I would try to give you some peace of mind.
To answer your question, no that isnt bad. For comparison, look at the average results of the 8600m GT.

You be the judge
HP 8710p underperforms!
