    Hello all.

I have an HP Envy 17-1150es with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850.

For some reason, whenever I use the latest video drivers, games such as Skyrim freeze or the image gets corrupted (for instance, lines appear when I move windows around in the desktop.

I thought it was a hardware problem, but somehow using the earliest drivers I had (8.741.1.1-100621a1-101876C-HP) the problem seems to go away almost completely.

It's happened after a full reinstall as well, regardless of the latest drivers coming from AMD itself or Windows update. Only the aforementioned driver seems to work.

Because this laptop has overheating issues, I'm still concerned about a hardware problem.
Is there a way I could rule this out?

    Thank you.

Using the older driver it goes away completely or almost completely? If it's the second one, then the dGPU may be nearing the end of its life cycle.

The lines and screen shaking, which for me were a tell-tale sign of GPU failure, went away when the old drivers were installed and after the full system reinstall they didn't happen even with the latest drivers.

Skyrim would crash rather often with the new drivers after the fresh system reinstall, but it seldom crashes if using the old drivers (have reinstalled the game twice). That's what I mean by almost completely. Battlefield 1942, The Sims 4 or Minecraft work well.

    Thanks.

Try modding tool for ATI. Mine was older x2300 radeon. Anything generic would simply crash and produce unintended results https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/flem-legacy-modder-tool-download.html
