What about Half-life 2, Ep 3?
-
No doubt Valve wants to make HL3 the best Half Life in the series. But they've been churning out games that are fantastic and right now, they have their hands tied with Counter Strike: Global Offensive and DotA 2. If you ask me, Valve has been busier than ever.
-
Well, Duke Nukem came out .................................after a bit of a wait.
There may be hope for HL3 although I've largely forgotten about it. -
-
So basically it will be out when it is done?
-
Not sure but somehow i get the impression that article didnt offer anything other than state that Valve was aware of fan frustration and they are not giving any dates or news to avoid it.
-
Yeah basically "nothing to see here, move along"...
Although they could at least say "it's in development" or "we plan on doing it" even if they don't give any timeline. -
Gabe looks awesome with his new beard!
and oh yeah.. what he basically said about HL3 or HL2ep3 is .. nothing
They've probably fallen prey to the Duke Nukem complex.. i.e. game was very near completion after a really long time and then they thought their game and engine doesnt stand up to the standard's of todays visuals, so they they're going to spend another couple of years updating or building a new game engine..
what they probably didnt realise is that even if it looked like HL1 , it would still outsell everything..Or maybe they realised it but decided to redo it anyway, just because they can.. -
I never really found myself immersed in the HL series. I've beaten HL1 and HL2 and then started the HL2 episodes, but I never found them as amazing as all the hype that surrounded them (even when they were new). Just a mediocre shooter with a decent story and pretty good graphics at the time of release.
-
i can stand to wait. no rush for singleplayer games.
however i do want dota2 and csgo to be released asap -
I agree completely, way overhyped imo. It is a classic without a doubt and it was revolutionary at it's prime but nothing to go crazy over.
-
HL1 was revolutionary at the time it was released. HL2 was a top notch shooter with a story, with a remarkably scalar game engine. I think the story is great and the universe is very interesting. In some respects HL2 didn't really break any new ground, but it also was pretty bug free and had varied game environments from the beginning to the end. Granted the gravity gun game mechanic was a bit overdone, but it was pretty unique too.
Episodes 1 and 2 were great at continuing the story, but IMHO they should have just used the original HL2 Source engine as it was and released the episodes, because it was far too long between episodes, just for minor enhancements to the engine, for the short gameplay it offered. -
To be honest, I never quite got the story and just loved the gameplay. It wasn't until a few years later I decided to look up what the story is.

when HL2 came out, it had some of the best graphics that were playable. I remember playing through on my Geforce2 32mb video card and the game still looked great. and the physics were pretty fun. i prob spent hours in the demo playing with spawning NPCs and having them fight it out.

This. I seem to rarely finish single player games these days even when I have tons of free time (which hasn't been for awhile) due to multiplayer games taking up a majority of my time.
I can't see myself having any free time at all once GW2, Dota 2 and Tribes Ascend release, but why would I considering that covers 3 completely different genres and 2 of those games will be free2play and the other has no monthly fee. -
how can anybody disagree with what you say, don't know... HL is a revolutionary game series, I think that is pretty much the consensus..
-
As long as it plays smoothly on my laptop in 1080p while not looking worse than Episode 2, I'm fine.
-
The hype behind is not unjustified. Both games (HL 1 and 2, not the episodes) represented steps forward to the FPS genre back in their time:
HL1: No more chapter and scenarios. Just a continuous game were the story was interactive (presented in the scenario) rather than at the beginning or end of a section (in the form of text).
HL2: Use of multiple (imaginative weapons) and a variety of things to do (weapons, control minions, control soldiers, car sections).
On topic: wish they could soon decide what they're doing with the HL franchise, rather than teasing with t-shirts and vague interviews... -
Well what more do you want????
I'm sorry but that's crazy. -

Half Life 1 was also one of the first FPS games to introduce in-game scripted sequences. You "stumbled" into the action which made you feel far more a part of the game. The mystery elements added to the whole thing as you tried to figure it all out from the moment the game started and you were going down the tunnel.
Half Life 2 had far more of the mystery and the coherence of the post-apocalypse world made the story take center stage. The Non-Player Characters were also a radical departure for an FPS, where it felt like the world was much more alive than just a simple "Empty-building-shoot-the-monster" type game. The environments were also well laid out, instead of random obstacles. A village by the sea, looked like a village by the sea.
Viewed as the fore-runner for these concepts, the games were revolutionary at the time. Kind of like Pop Films, 2001, Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver or Apocalypse Now; they loose some of their grandeur if you are seeing them for the first time, 20 years after their initial release.. because there have been so many copy cats and progressions. -
I agree with you except on the bolded text ... that was already since the original HL
Also: If I remember correctly even the AI of the soldier in HL was kind of advanced for 1998. -
Cant wait for HL3 release!
-
Half Life 3 in production?
Guess he finally ordered a salad. -
For me this is where HL2 really excelled. Right from the start it felt like I was thrown into a completely changed world and trying to discover what has happened since I was gone. The character development was really well done too, along with excellent voice acting. The whole thing was very immersive, at the end of episode 2 I felt a loss.
It is still one of my favorite games. My wife has even been playing it and she normally hates first person shooters.
HURRAY!! Half Life 3 maybe in production!
