Duke Nukem Forever Teaser finally emerges!
Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever.
After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.
Tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th, around noon CST, we will release the first teaser trailer from Duke Nukem Forever. To tide you over until then, here is a screen shot taken from the teaser.
Thank you for being fans of the game and for your continued patience.
I'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John).

They've put out teasers before (both photos and trailers). I've given up even trying to get excited about this until there is at least a demo. With the state of first person shooters now, 3DRealms is going to have to do something amazing to even make people take a second glance at the sequel to a decade-old game most famous for its wise-cracking hero.
-
And how many people actually care?
-
After watching (nsfw, cursing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE3KdcTgrno you'll care
That's all the trailer you need to get fired up -

I care only in so much as DNF has become a perennial punchline for the industry. It's become obligatory for Top 10 Vaporware lists to include it, usually as #1.
DNF being worked on? The day I can play it is the day I'll believe it. Any jackhole can make a teaser/trailer for something. It's something else to make the damn game. Why waste time making the trailer when that time could be spent...you know...working on the game? -
lmao duke nukem is goin to suck i bet u

isn't it a little too early for april fools

Take some things into account before labelling it all as a complete failure.... First of all there isnt an infinite number of $$$ within 3Drealms to carry on if it turned out to be a doomed project and you still have a +30 team which probably wont waste their time making something which will never see the light of day.
This teaser have already from its teaser pic shown they are going somewhere.... -
What, so 12'ish years as vaporware isn't enough to make people doubt?
I'm not counting it a complete failure. I'm just sane enough to realize that for more than a decade, they've put out occasional screenshots and teasers, and the game still isn't any closer than it was a decade ago. Why should this current teaser change anything?
And just as importantly, how sure are you that a FPS originally conceived in 1998 or something will still be able to stand up to the competition in 2008? Hasn't it occurred to anyone that even if it comes out one day, it'll be yet another bland and insignificant FPS? The genre has evolved a lot in the last decade. has Duke Nukem?
And talking about "not having an infinite amount of money" is complete nonsensical, because they've *already* thrown away 10 years of development time and costs, so obviously, expenses don't mean the same thing to 3DRealms as it does to the rest of the world.
And if you didn't already know, most of the dev team has already left (several times?) *because* it was going nowhere. They've had to basically hire a new team at least once already. Don't tell me that's a sign of a game that's "going somewhere". -
At this point, they might as well remake the original with updated graphics. That would probably just as good as if not better than anything that they would actually put out with updated content. Just license the latest Unreal or Crytek engine and just do it.

A little history lesson...Duke Nukem will wipe out any opponents with his unique mix of violence and hirony (note the book on the vid "why i'm so great")

I'm past the point of being 'fired up'. I'll wait for some reviews before I'll even think about buying.

Trailer is available in high definition @ www.gamershell.com. Looks like the old Doom 3 engine is being used for this game.

Well, here's another thought for you optimists.
What was this teaser doing at an internal Christmas party?
Let's be serious here. There's literally no ingame footage, and only a smallish amount of in-engine footage. Is this what you'd show your own f'ing dev team? Is this likely to wow the artists and programmers *working on the game*?
It must be, because otherwise they wouldn't have shown it to them at a Christmas party.
Now, if these small glimpses of in-engine graphics is enough to impress the dev team (and enough to make them go "Hey, we need to show this to the world!", what does that tell you about how far along the game is?
To me, it smells of "hey, we can finally run the engine without crashing instantly, and we're able to load up characters and animations! Sweet, get the animators to make something cool-looking then!"
Couple this with the fact that they have far *less* to show than they did in 2001 or 1998 (look up those old trailers on Youtube), and.... I'd say it's fair game to assume the game will stay vaporware for another couple of years. Yes, it may one day show something real and tangible, but today wasn't that day. Today they just showed that it's still vaporware just like it was 3 years ago, or 6 years ago.
Perhaps two years from now it'll be real. But this teaser hasn't really made it seem more or less likely.
It's not that I don't like the new teaser. It's ok, I suppose.
It's just not any more relevant than the eternal "it's coming soon for real this time, we promise" they've been throwing out for a decade now. -
Oh man I lol'd HARD!
Especially the fact that theres some picture of a guy out there with the DNF preorder receipt.. Im sure $39.99 was worth alot more 10 years ago. I on the other hand, cannot wait for this game to come out. I think within the next 4-5 years the game should be polished up and good to go... Until they have to update the graphics again and use a new engine. -
