No you can play it without HL2 but you wont know the story line. It was enjoyable to play the graphics were nice, though yes some might find it short

You do not need to own the original Half-Life 2 - although I'd suggest you do. Besides being an awesome game, Episode 1 picks up immediately where the original left off, so it helps to know the back story.

In any case, I really liked Episode 1. It is pretty short (about 8 hours, give or take), but for $10, it's definitely worth it (I payed $20 for it at launch). You can also enable developer commentary embedded into the game that talks about how the game was made and how they made design decisions; I really liked it.

Edit: Actually, if you can wait about a month or so, you should buy the Orange Box, which is a ridiculous value, particularly for someone who doesn't own Half-Life 2. It will include the original Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and the upcoming Episode 2, plus the new games Portal and Team Fortress 2. All for $50 for PC users. Get that.
