I have an HP Pavillion zx5000 with current video drivers and the game keeps freezing at the same point. Right after Mr. what's hisname says "I could swear it was Gordon Freeman. Why is my laptop doing this?

your post beat me by 3 seconds, LOL! how much RAM do you have for that card? You might want to try playing the game in a lower graphics setting mode to see if that alleviates the problem.

I would start by testing your ram. Freezing should not happen even if your specs are too low but it is true that if you change or lower your graphics settings this may help to prevent it even if it is memory related. A good free test is 3dmark 2003. It doesnt test your ram but it is a reliable tool for testing stability of your chipset. 3dmark 2003 is free. If your laptop doesnt freeze during the benchmark try "hot cpu". It is also a free program in gui that will accurately burn in your ram.
If you need a reliable third party dos based tester contact me directly and ill send you a utility by email www.geared2play.com

Hi Abaxter - I'm considering buying a T42 IBM with Radeon 9600 Pentium M 1.7GHz, 512MB. Will I be able to play half life 2 without problems? Doom3?

    Thanks

HL2 runs flawless on my Zx5000

    3.2 Ghz p4
    1GB ram
    80GB 4200 rpm HD
    Winxp home
    128mb 9600

Try upping the ram see if it helps.

that looks like it should run fine.... if it was 64mb ram on the vid card it could be the textures, but with the 128 it's probably something else... could be you have it on too high of resolution (whats it set to?), could be bad drivers or could be overheating... use fraps to test your frames per second... if it's high it's likely not the resolution being too high.

Got Doom 3, and running it, but it shuts down every so often, and has also locked up once.

    System info below...

We've downloaded the patch, but is there something we need from HP?

Use the Omega drivers. I have a zx5000 and they work great for me, HL2 plays great. If it's not a hardware problem, I'm not sure. However,

    http://downloads.gamezone.com/demos/d11999.htm

Try installing that HL2 enhancer. I'm not certain but I *believe* it gives you a level select feature when you start a new game. Therefore you can choose say the 2nd level or whatever and hopefully it'll skip over the hiccup you're having, though you might miss some of the game, but it's better than nothing. I'm not certain that's the right tool for it... I have it on mine but I forget where I got it, give that a try and if it doesn't work search around for something similar. Good luck.
