is it, isn't it, will it, wont it.
well this has been the discussion over the last few years.
well, is this the biggest hint yet or timely leak that the rumour mill has started again.
half life was some of the first games i ever played on pc when i got my first gaming rig 7 years ago and back then they were honestly awesome and in the same league as the original crysis.
for all the new gamers joining our community, if you havnt played these games yet then buy the orange box (£14.99 on steam) or wait for the next big steam sale as it was £4.99 as far as i can remember last year.
what does everyone else think.

Finally, took their time.

Release date October 2018... they get 5 years to use the trademark... No matter what, the span between sequels is ridiculous. Half-Life 1 came out in October 1998, Half-Life 2 November 2004, HL2 Episode 1 June 2006, HL2 Episode 2 October 2007.

I wish it was 2008, lol. In any case it would make sense to use it as a SteamOS exclusive. But then again, SteamOS is free.

Yay, HL3 using the same dated Source Engine? A game released in 2018 that looks like it was developed in 2004? Sweetness.

Source engine is not the same as it was in 2004. It has evolved just as the Cry and Unreal engines have. Just Valve doesn't number them like the other devs do. But yeah, graphics aren't everything. Give me a great storyline, interesting weapons, and engaging environments and characters. I'll take that with the 2004 Source engine over an awesome looking crappy game.

You started this thread 5 years too early. The truth is Half-Life 3 will never live up to the enormous weight of hype, expectations, and long development time unless it's an absolutely revolutionary game. Duke Nukem forever, which was actually a decent game, suffered from this exact same dilemma. Not to say I don't think HL3 will be much better than DNF.

I would question what constitutes a good game in your opinion... Duke Nukem Forever for me was absolutely abysmal.
-
DNF suffered a different fate. It was handed off between developers, started, stopped, cancelled, resurrected, and in the end was released probably just to appease the masses and then game over.
Half-Life 3 on the other hand already has a full story arc and universe to build on, as well as a committed developer and publisher with the proper resources. I don't think it has to be revolutionary, just continue the tale the way they have told it. It's really more of a story to tell than the game itself.reborn2003, MrDJ and killkenny1 like this. -
Even if it's just more of Half Life 2 and makes little effort to innovate (which I highly doubt) it'd still be my favourite game ever, because Half Life 2 is my favourite game ever. As long as it matches the quality of Half Life 2 and Half Life, I'm more than happy. I very much expect Valve to try to reinvent the current standard for FPS genre. At the very worst I expect a decent game. It seems as though Valve are incapable of making a bad game! I have faith in Gaben!
Godammit I just want to know what happens to all the characters afterEli's death.

I feel differently, Valve seems very capable of making bad games. L4D, L4D2 and HL2 is overrated.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion... if not interested then move along, nothing to see here.

I think from their internal people picker software, it looked like 46 people were assigned to Half Life 3. To me that doesn't sound like enough people to make the game. So it could be a ways off. Then again, maybe they finished most of it and those people are the wrap up team.
Also, I know Gabe said they had a bunch of AAA games lined up for SteamOS. He said he would announce those later. I wonder when he will announce those. I would think HL3 would be in that group. -

I think SC2 was quite successful, but satisfied primarily the hard core fans. Diablo 3 just had horrible execution from day 1.
I do think it has a steep expectation, but it also has a story to tell unlike SC2 or Diablo 3 or DNF even. Those were each independent games. -
I wonder when people will catch on that Valve is just toying with them and dangling vaporware to keep people excited Valve's other ventures.

That post would be hilarious if it was true! Well written!

Funny. Seems the same people that say Valve should do it as they would make a ton of money, are the same ones that complain corporations just want to make money.
On the other hand, didn't Valve at one time say they would release yearly "episodes" of this game?reborn2003 likes this.
