So, I just beat Half Life 2 and both episodes (on Xbox) [AMAZING!] however, I want to go and play the original Half Life. I'm going to buy it on Steam. Which one should I buy? I know HLSource is remastered by Valve however I don't know if they changed up anything or left the story the way it original was. Also, would you recomend buying HLBlue Shift and HLOpposing Force?
Edit: For Option 1, I have no interest or intention of playing TF Classic, also that bundle costs $7.50, not sure why it cut out on posting it.

HL Source is essentially the game Valve released in 1998 just written in the Source engine. There is nothing in the way of new content or anything like that.
Going with option 1 gets the game written in the original form, but you can download (for free) an add-on that includes higher-resolution models that makes the game look better than HL Source. The only thing you don't get is the Source engine's improved physics, but that part only really comes into play when you kill an enemy. It doesn't add to the immersion as much as the high-res models.
Opposing Force and Blue Shift are among the best expansion packs ever created. Both are extremely solid campaigns that last about 5-7 and 2-4 hours, respectively, depending on how quickly you move. Even if you don't play TF Classic, the $7.50 you would spend on the other titles is well worth it. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Aren't they selling the entire Valve collection for like 50 bucks? Much better deal IMO, you get L4D/L4D2, HL2, CS/CS:S, DoD/DoD:S, Portal1/2 and all the little mods based off the original engine.

To experience the games in the best possible way with the best available graphics enhancements, you need:
1) Half-Life: Source + HL:S:HD v02 beta mod
2) Half-Life original (non-Source), Blue Shift and Opposing Force + Blue Shift: Unlocked mod + High Definition Pack for Steam -

Blue Shift had improved models. The PS2 release contained even better ones. The community took the PS2 ones, improved them even further, fixed some bugs and improved some textures, and the result is what I posted.

Blue Shift was just an unbelievable addition to an unbelievable game.
Op For was decent as well... didn't get AS into it as Blue Shift though. -
Gotta go with the original and all the add-ons. The Source version really is a bit of a let-down.
As far as a true HD remake of the original goes...well, let's just hope that the Black Mesa: Source mod comes out sometime in our lives. -
Thanks everyone! -

yeah the originals are the way to go- the source version just ports the same assets into the source engine, it's not "what half life 1 could have been if it were made with the source engine"
You'll have to wait about 10 years for the black mesa: source mod team to finish -
Im waiting for HL3

+1 Half Life: Source + BS & OF

I too was thinking of grabbing HL:Source, but after looking up soem youtube vids, it looks exactly the same as the original HL, just with higher res textures.
Nothing new about the game. -
But you could get by with just the Anthology, I guess, it just won't be fully maxed. -

i would definitely just get the original, see what the game was, and then see the re-imagined version when black mesa comes out
-
Haha, I went to check the Black Mesa website...because you never know right?
No. -

How did I not know this existed? -

If it's not too late, I'd recommend the original Half-Life over the Source port. HL:Source did nothing except add water physics and ragdolls. Plus you lose out on all of the GoldSrc mods that use the original Half-Life such as "Sven Co-op," "Afraid of Monsters," "They Hunger," and "Cry of Fear," to name a few. I also highly recommend the expansions, Opposing Force more so than Blue Shift. Team Fortress Classic is pretty much dead and I wouldn't recommend it now, but if the Anthology is cheaper than buying all the Half-Life 1 games separately, then go for it.
In my opinion, the combat and gun play in the original Half-Life and its expansions was better than it was in Half-Life 2. The combination of the old-school Quake style shooting and movement, the variety in enemies (human and alien), the smarter enemy AI, the HUGE amount of weapons you get to play with (especially in Opposing Force), and the RIDICULOUS amount of ammo you get for those weapons made for some very memorable firefights (Surface Tension, anyone?). So much so, in fact, that I will oftentimes reload a save just to fight it out a different way.
Look at it this way: You have 50+250 reserve bullets for your SMG, 10 (!) grenades for the SMG grenade launcher, 8+125 shells for your shotgun, 6+36 bullets for your revolver, 1+5 rockets for your RPG, and you can carry 10 grenades (that you can cook), 5 satchel charges, 5 tripmines, plus a bunch of other experimental and alien weapons. Just imagine all of the possibilities when you have that many weapons, that much ammo, and a room full of enemies. It's Quake/Doom-style shooting at its finest. -
Just to let everyone know. I just beat Half-Life yesterday (I didn't buy Source as I mentioned in an above post). It was definitely a lot of fun. I enjoyed the game very much. I have to say I definitely prefer Half-Life 2 since there is deep characterization and they dive futher into whats going on but Half-Life was still amazing. I'm going to hit up the expansions soon. Also, I didn't play with any game or texture mods.
Half Life or Half Life: Source?
