I've just recently started playing HL2, and all has been going somewhat well so far. I occasionally get crashes when the game is loading; like I am playing a level, and the loading message pops up in the middle of the screen, and the game stops responding. But I just encountered something different last night. After the last jump of the Water Hazard level, I land in the water on the other side, the loading message pops up, and about half a second later, the game crashes to desktop.

I've read up a bit on this and tried to disable autosave by setting sv_autosave 0 but that didn't change anything. I also tried forcing dx9 and dx8 but same problem. I have been thinking this might be due to bad install and the next level is corrupted or something. Anybody have any ideas on what I can do?

Reinstall it and it should work.

Agree with the above. This is the old Steam standby resolution. I would advise to backup your config folder to save any binds and such. Good luck. BTW, you may want to download and reinstall HL2 (and any other games you want), then make a backup via the Steam Launcher to save you the download time in the future for those games.

This happened to me every time I was loading a new scene. Just wait it out and don't click anything, and it should be fine.

Will my saves be gone after the reinstall or will steam keep that recorded somewhere?

That happens sometimes, and I wait it out like you say. But my problem is that the loading message pops up and instantly crash to desktop. I don't click anything because I would only have half a second to do so.

Fix'd. I did a simple workaround instead of the reinstall. I used sv_unlockedchapters 5 to start the next level in new game. Everything is working fine so far, except for the occasional hangs on loading messages. But at least no instant crashes :D. Thanks for the help though.

It happened again at the end of the Sandtraps level. I just used sv_unlockedchapters 9 to get to the Nova Prospekt level. I really don't mind this crash because it's easily worked around. The game still plays fine and I see no reason for a reinstall if all I need to do is unlock the next chapter from the console.

On another note though, THIS GAME IS AMAZING! I am definitely going to play this game over and over again. I was looking into some graphics mods the other day and Fakefactory's cinematic mod v9 looks promising, I'll be sure to install it for my second playthrough. Can't wait to see Ravenholm with the crazy textures :D.

Had the same problem. It's a defect with the game running in 64 bit. Run it in 32 bit. Go to the launch options and put in:

    -32bit

I think it runs better in 32 bit anyway but it eliminated the loading problem you mentioned for me.

    That sounds awesome

I finished the game on my old rig, but I want to play through it on my new rig fully maxed out

Can you post a link to the texture mod you are talking about
    Many thanks
