I am very close to purchasing a laptop, my only concern I have left is the GPU. I have heard that the 7400 and the x1400 can play Half-Life 2 at max settings. Is this true? Half-Life 2 and some other source engine titles/mods are the only games I want to play on my laptop.

Depends on the size screen and the rest of your specs but generally speaking, Source is very well coded and 7400 and X1400 cards can run any games based on the engine at high settings.

I've not tried all of them, but CS:S and DOD ran very well on my 7400 with 15.4" screen.

i think you can play hl2 at max with 1280*800 res. The fps will be arround 30. But it's a guess based on 3Dmark05 scores so don't take my post too serious.

I can play EP1 @ 1280x800, everything at high, and HDR on. I get about 35FPS like PC_pulsar said, but if you tweak the pre-rendered frames to 0 it runs like its at 50FPS.

i can run the original hl2 and cs:source at full 1680*1050 that my laptop has. that said, i downloaded lost cost (basically pre-ep1) and you do have to turn down the resolution a bit, there's a lot more texture. but generally, yes half life 2 runs well on this card, espeically if you have the other resources to back it up (read: ram)

I had a 128MB+128MB Go7400 machine with a 17" WXGA+ display for testing back in June. It ran Half-Life 2 at max. settings at 1440x900 if I remember correctly.

Half-Life 2/Source-engine based games will run on just about everything, it scales with hardware extremely well.
