Being the 10th anniversary of Half-Life, Steam has discounted the award-winning title to $0.98. The sale ends Friday at 3:00 PM EST. If you haven't played it yet, you might as well buy it now. Note: This doesn't include HL:Source which was an updated version but which was not well received. The original version of HL can be upgraded with the high-def model pack available on Steam for free.

-using Orange Box build of Source engine
-only requirement will be Steam account with any Source game

I know seriously lol. But it looks great. Who can argue for a free, standalone game based on one of the most popular titles ever? I can't :D

Edit: naticus make sure to pick up the HD pack. It helps a decent amount.

Is there any benefit to downloading the original HL if you have HL source? Why was HL source not well received?

If you have HL:Source, you probably don't need HL. HL:S was Valve's attempt to update the game using the Source engine (HL2). The game was supposed to look better and have added physics. In some areas HL:S looked worse than HL. I can't say definitely though as I never purchased HL:S, but not many people recommend it.

Yeah, make sure 1.) to run HL through Steam and 2.) set compatibility mode (right-click the .exe file and go to properties) to either Win98 or Me. It should work fine after that.

The problem with HL:S is that it uses the advanced rendering of Source with antiquated textures. It's like using high quality automotive paint for a childs art project.

The game pretty much plays the same, though, and I am actually able to play through it with the Source engine because I got nauseous with the original one for some reason.
