Hi. I just started playing HL2 on my laptop today. Its been locking up a few times to the point where the whole computer freezes and the only way to fix it is to hold down the power button to shut it off and reboot it. At first I thought it may be the drivers so I followed the instructions in Chaz's post about updating drivers. I removed the old driver and installed the Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.330 (Catalyst 7.1). (Hopefully those are the right ones.) Well, even after doing that it is still locking up.

I have all my game settings on high which are recommended. Except for antialiasing which is recommended as none, but I have it on 2X. And filtering mode is suggested to Trilinear, but I have it on Anistropic 2X. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thank you.

Have you checked your notebooks temps? Heat is a common cause of random lockups, I suggest you clean out all the dust, makes sure its on flat level surface with nothing obstructing the vents, and use some type of monitoring program such as NHC to monitor and adjust your fan speeds, if its a heat related issue those suggestions should take care of it.

Are you having issues with any other apps that put a load on your graphics card?

Well the game is updated so thats not an issue.

I just downloaded NHC. Current CPU temp just serfing the net for the last hour is 51C and Hard Drive Temp is 30C. Ill try playing the game for a while and then check the temps. Are there any programs available that can monitor and display temps while gaming?

As far as the GPU temp, I read the temperature article in the dummy guides and downloaded RivaTuner2.0. But from what I gather, its meant for desktop GPUs, and if it does happen to work with notebook cards it is not as compatable with ATI cards. Also, if i understand it right, according to a couple others that have X700 gpus there is no way to monitor the temp. Is that correct? If not what program can I use?

Your temperatures seem totally normal. It seems like a software issue. What's the "condition" of your laptop. Perhaps you just need to clean up your Hard Drive a bit. Do you have a lot of backup programs running while running Steam and HL2?

I recommend a HDD defragment, Registry Clean up, and getting rid of services you simply do not need.

The source engine and Havok Physics Code do a fantastic job of conforming to old hardware levels, so it's definitely not a problem with the speed of your components. Your computer is obviously not running as efficienty as it could do.

Ok my hard drive is completely defragmented. Plenty of room left. Also updated the DX9 drivers. After playing for an hour my CPU temp is 68C and harddrive temp 34C. It still froze and locked up on me once. The only thing i can think of is that the times it has happened was when i was trying to jump. I have the "end" key as my jump button. can that have anything to do with it?

i had similar problems (random freezing) but now i got an even worse prob, that it wont start up. I get an error message: Runtime Error! program: c:\program
R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Iv tried reinstalling HL2 and steam, but neither have helped. Any ideas anyone?

OK....any other suggestions. My game has locked up my laptop multiple times today. It would just freeze at random intervals, after not even playing for 15 min. I have done everything i can think of. Game is up to date. Drivers are updated. Everything is on recommended settings. Hard drive defragmented. No spyware or viruses. Temps seem normal. Have a cooling pad.

The only other game I have played on this laptop has been WoW. I realize WoW isnt as graphic intense, but I never had any problems at all whatsoever. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe it's an audio issue. Try disabling the audio and see how that goes.
