Well I started playing Halo, but I constantly get rammed with graphical glitches. When I look around it looks like huge white polygons or lines are flashing around on my screen. They seem to be white/blue-ish. The trees in the brackground also flicker from darker to lighter, same with textures on buildings.
I wish I could show you a screen shot to help, but when I took a series of screen shots while looking around, I checked the picture folder.... and they, for some reason, look perfectly normal. I also tried to capture a video, but as soon as I started recording the problem went away.
Since it only happens when I'm on foot, and goes away when I start recording I don't think it's a problem with my GPU. Another thing is that the glitching is followed by a FPS drop into the teens...
I'm using the 169.04 driver.
Is this game just bad while in Vista? Is there any way to fix this?
-
I had the exact same issues - the glitches were especially bad for me on Hang'em High and Prisoner. It occured for me on both the 169.02 drivers (stock and overclocked the same), 156.55, and the latest official Dell drivers. And similarly, the FPS dropped into the upper teens when the glitching occured, when I was getting 60 FPS when glitching didn't occur (which was unfortunatly the minority of the time).
I never was able to fix this with Vista, but switching to XP solved the problems instantly and they have yet to recur. Everything works without glitches.
This was one of the major reasons I gave up on Vista. It's probably not feasible to switch to XP, unless you have Business/Ultimate and can downgrade, so I'd recommend buying the OSX version of Halo if you want to keep playing it. It should play perfectly. -
Hmmm... now that's a downer. Thanks for the info. I was kind of steering away from the Mac version since I got glitches in the demo also. I assume it doesn't play nice with Leopard either... but then again the demos pretty old. I'll try the Mac version, thanks

I had the same problems as you guys, just some weird glitching or something.
I am using the 169.04 drivers as the OP is, I would try it out for Mac. We can't but you have the option to, so I would go for it. -
Halo 1 runs fine on my system, maybe a reinstall would help?
-
Halo 1 ran great for me too..no glitches.i'm using windows vista basic. try updating your drivers and configuring your graphics card..good luck with that
-
I think the biggest issue with Halo 1 is that it sucks?
Go play a real game like COD4 or TF2!!! -
I have CoD4. I want to play Halo 1 before 2 so I'm not totally lost. And TF2 is online only.
-
No problems on my end either. Hm
-
Halo 1? How old is that?
-
Very, very old. Circa 2001 on Xbox, 2003 on PC.
-
You guys both have different video cards than the same one the three of us with problems have. Stat-wise they aren't as good, but this may be a specific issue between the 8600M GT and Vista. So you guys can run it fine with Vista because you have a non-8600M GT card.
Just a theory, but it's quite possible that the fact that the three of us with problems all have the same video card isn't a coincidence.
I have COD4 as well. But none of my friends do, and I like to play Halo 1 with my friends. -
Halo 1 is a pretty good game, especially with a gamepad.
-
@ Apollo13: Hows about doing some reasearch and finding out if there is a problem with that Graphics cards and whether there is a fix for it. If all three of you have that problem then it's probably a problem avec le GPU
EDIT
conzy: I also have CoD4, and its really good 'casue of its realisticity
And don't just say a games sucks, people that say that generally suck at gaming
-
The 8--- series cards have had a few problems with certain games, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case, but I'll look into it in more detail.
Halo 1 issues on Vista.
