Half Life 2 is a must play so check out the Orange Box, it come with Half Life 2, HL2: Episodes 1 & 2, Team Fortress, and Portal. Also any of the Call of Duty Games, Call of Duty 1,2 and 4, and Call of Duty: United Offensive. I'd also suggest the Star Wars: Empire at War games, those are good if your into Star Wars or RTS games. Other great games to check out would be Bioshock, Mass Effect, Assasins Creed and Gears of War. So those are my recommendations.

I would recommend F.E.A.R. I'm currently playing it and some parts of it will creep you out when you are alone in the dark playing it.

If you are going to get hl2, try getting the Orange box. It contains a whole lot of other fps which might spark your interest.

I was in a similar boat as you are, not having played a pc game other than warcraft in about 4-5 years, and Bioshock may be the greatest thing ever.

I know that every person has a preference, but Bioshock being the best ever? It offers nice new features, but it doesn't have a solid shooting mechanism like in other shooters.

Obviously my statement of best thing ever was hyperbole, but the overall experience of the game immerses you in a spectacular way.
