I'm looking at a refurbished notebook with the 8600M GT, the notebook carries a 1 year warranty.

The price is extremely good, but I'm worried about the chip going defunct at some point.

Not sure if it's hysteria, just a higher rate of failure relative to other cards (which is still low ?) anyone had problems with the 8600M GT after a year of ownership? less?

Only problems I've ever had with an 8600m GT was heat issues.

The one in my Macbook Pro started failing, Apple replaced it for free, and would've done so even without a warranty due to the fact that Nvidia spent so much money paying OEMs for repairs related to the 8600m GT.

Kinda like how you get a free extended warranty for your Xbox 360 that covers only the Red Ring of Death.

I'd check with the sell/warranty seller to see if that is covered, though.

The seller might be trying to get rid of a laptop with a known defective Nvidia chip by selling it at a very good price. Though, I probably wouldn't worry about the 8600M GT failing anytime soon, you want to check with whomever is providing the coverage for the warranty to see if this defect is covered. There was an indepth article (I forgot which site; you have to Google) about why the chips were defective and couldn't easily be repaired, since they claimed that Nvidia would need to redo the whole chip.

If this seller is offering it at a very good price, there has to be a reason behind it. Do your homework before you bite; that's my advice.

I've had no problems so far. Replacing the stock Dell thermal paste was the best thing I've done. :D

But before you buy it, just try to reconfirm any warranty regarding the GPU.

After owning a 8600M, I would never do it again. I say wait for another deal on a newer GPU before going with a refurb. My chip finally gave out, nearly 2 years after purchase. There are many that had immediate problems as well. Save yourself the high possibility of issue and go with something else.

If you consider idling around 70C, or hitting 100C+ under load to be "problems", then yes.

Storm....dont bring that up please; my 360 got the RRoD two weeks after the warranty ended. :(

Really? You should still be covered no matter what! 1 year warranty + 3 year RROD warranty (Which is for every XBOX 360) = 4 year warranty.

    Did you call them already?

Yea, the lady said the warranty officially ended on like, November 28th ( i think 28th ) 2008, so for them fix my Xbox, I would need to pay $100. I was so heated!!

My 8600M GT died on me... I also had a lot of stuttering and heat problems with it... Asus replaced the motherboard to a new one with an 9500M GS on it...

I have one in my xps m1530... the first one died after about 3 months (I use my laptop a LOT). The one I currently have (dell sent me an entirely new machine) still runs great (idles 52-64, gaming max is around 72). Seems like the y cleared up the issues they had with them (or I just got lucky)

i've had my m1530 for almost a year now, and everything is still workin great.

it's pretty much a hit or miss type of thing. my comp is usually on 18-24 hours a day. i do game at times and watch alot of movies. so far everything has been workin great.

if the 8600gt is what meets yur needs/wants then i wouldn't hesitate to get it. just make sure there is some kind of warranty incase anythin does go wrong. the manufacturer should be able to take care of u without a 2nd thought.

Have had a Vostro 1500 with the 8600m GT for ~17 months now. No problems so far. I game regularly, and overclock it about 20-25%, and peak temperature is about ~75C. Of course, I also have a notebook cooler so that may help slightly.

I have owned my JFL92 for around 14 months now and the 8600M GT has not given me any trouble so far. I haven't overclocked it, but nor have I been kind to it: because I take the machine to work every day (~6 days a week), I turn it on and off a whole lot and I also play games on it for hours at time. I bought a 3 year warranty for it so I'm not too worried, but it would still be a pain in the neck to send it back so I hope it doesn't break.

More than a year on my Vostro 1500, no problems on hardware so far. No overclocking on this system and GPU temps never exceed CPU temps.

So far almost 1.5 years and no problems whatsoever. One thing to notice, which I am not sure is: does the majority of cards that have died were the ones presenting abnormal high temperatures? If that is the case, then I am safe.

OK so if you manage to get 2 years out of it before it dies, compared to other GPUs or laptops is that still really bad? How long should laptop GPUs last?

I've had my M1530 for 13 months but I had my motherboard (which includes the GPU) replaced 6 months ago because of overheating. Changing it did nothing to the temps though....the cause was the heatsink. So my GPU is actually only 6 months old which means I have 11 months warranty left on the GPU, so if it lasts till then it'll be 1.5 years old.......then it might die 5 months later and I'll be screwed *sigh*

Yeah i have. Got it replaced a few months ago (first one lasted 9 months), and it did fix the temps. But i still think my card is faulty. I still get lots of horizontal lines when i play any game. And during movies, if there is red on the screen there are lots of horizontal lines. I dunno whats wrong with it lol.

However, if you do get it i recommend changing the thermal paste. It has made a huge difference to my temps.

I have a GS, but it still has the same difective issues...

I had mine for about half a year, with no problems, except a little extra heat.
Then i sent it in for a screen repair, and HP also replaced my GPU :p

So, ive had this one for probably like 7-8 months with no problrms. and its much cooler than my old one. :D

...I still would recommend against buying it, because many do fail. I wouldnt take the chance. ;)

If it is still under warranty go and make them check the issue. That is definitely not normal nor desirable.
