    Hello

I have an HP 8710w with a Quadro FX 1600M graphics card. I have been experiencing my problem for several months now. I have tried installing all imaginable graphics drivers, even doing a fresh install of Windows twice(XP and Windows 7) but to no avail. The problem I am having is difficult to explain but the following represents my best attempt:

If X is the speed that a laptop runs at while plugged in(i.e. best performance and full use of components) then Y is the speed the laptop runs at while running on battery. However, even when plugged in, my laptop runs at Y. The kicker is that if I unplug and replug the AC power to the laptop again and again, I eventually get the laptop running at X again. I have to do this every time I want to use a graphically intensive application or my framerates are that of Y. I have tried taking out the battery and running the laptop directly from my charger. The problem persists. I have tried using a different charger. The problem persists. Everyone I speak to seems to think it is a software problem. How can this be when I've reinstalled Windows twice?

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

You say you have tried many video drivers. That is a good start when encountering this kind of problem, but I wonder if the problem lies elsewhere.

You may try checking your ATi Control Panel or Catalyst Control Center for Powerplay settings. Try turning them off.

If you think it may be the processor at fault, and it very well may be, I can give you a command line to make your processor run at full speed at all times to see if that changes anything.

You may even need a driver for some kind of device controller if your notebook has a unique configuration in order for Windows to recognize it correctly.

silly question but when you download the drivers from nvidia do you change the drop down box from Gforce to Quadro. and do you use driver cleaner pro to remove the old drivers in safe mode.

is your battery power set on high performance.

how many processes have you running in the background.

cant think of anything else at the moment but it will give us a better idea.

Shoot! Sean473 is right. I completely overlooked that detail and I know that's an Nvidia card. Stupid me! I should be slapped for that one.

Anyway, I do think you could try the other settings for the processor though if all else fails.

Have you got CPUZ? if not here is the link http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

It will tell you the specs of your cpu and what speed it is running at. Try changing your battery settings from power saver to high performance while cpuz is open to see if the cpu is actually changing speed, as the problem you describe sounds like it is set on power saver all of the time.
