    Help Please - how does screen resolution affect gaming performance?

    Hi,
    I am stuck between the dv7t and the dv5t. They are the same except that the dv7t is 17in. They both have a Nvidia 9700M GT. I heard somewhere that the bigger your notebook screen is, the more it will work your graphics card when you play games. Or is it screen resolution?

    It's screen resolution. It's all digital - the only size that matters for a LCD screen is the pixel count.


    Worse comes to worse, you drop the resolution in game.

    Think you mean 9600M GT, not 9700. :)

    It all comes down to your budget, and how you will be using your laptop. If you are going to be traveling a lot with it, I would go with the dv5t.

    Other part of your question, I believe you are thinking of the screen res.

    I got a dv5t (specs in sig) with a 1680x1050 res. It is amazing, and games look great. :)

    it's the higher resolution that taxes your system. But on a 17' inch screen 1280x1024 will look so crappy that you'll almost always need 1440x1200. So generally you'll need a stronger gpu in a bigger laptop. THe 9700m gt should run everything just fine.

    So the higher the resolution the better processor you need, not graphics card right?

    Other way around, the higher the resolution, the more powerful your video card needs to be to run that resolution.

    Resolutions shouldn't really have much of an impact on your CPU - at higher resolutions you tend to be GPU limited.

    No the higher the resolution the more and the faster your gfx needs to be. You also need more Vram @ higher resolutions. Usually for resolutions under 1440x1200 you'll be fine with 256mb of Vram.

    the difference between a 14.1 and 17 inch screen would be significant while running the same resolution, the image needs to be spread over more surface area so it tends to look blocky.

    Resolution is mainly affected by your GPU's memory bandwidth.

    The type + speed of your GPU does play a role, but the bandwidth of your video memory is central to high resolution performance.

    Try some over + underclocking of various GPU + memory settings @ 1900X1200 + see what happens.
