Whenever i want to play bf2 on the internet it'll take me at least 20 minutes to connect to a server and then a further 5-10 for it to get settled with no lag
i have a new dell 1520 with updated drivers at;
core 2 duo t7100 1.8
1gb ram
256mb geforce 8600 gt

and then once i've waited ages at that loading screen with that anoyin music that plays over and over most of the time it'll go i've disconected from the server or something even after letting it load all that time and i have to start all over again!
this surely cant be normal because it drives me mental when all i wanna do is play a game
can anyone help us out it'd be much appriciated

Well the first thing I would point out is that you have the bare minimum amount of RAM for BF2, especially under Vista. I would seek 2GB minimum before attempting that combination.
More information would be nice. When you say "get settled with no lag" do you mean you are in the game and can play, but the game itself is stuttering (ie. unstable FPS)? Make sure you are connecting to servers with low ping, and that you are patched all the way. Other than that, I really can't say anything without more information. -

maybe your internet connection is slow?

well... upgrading the RAM will probably help with the lag.
Long load times are usually the fault of a slow HD... Sometimes, when you don't have enough RAM, the system will actually use your HD for memory, and this is a huge problem. You get EXTREMELY high latency on that data, and the load times for your program will increase dramatically because your HD isn't functioning at full capacity. -
The lag and stuttering in the first minutes of joining a game is usually remedied by getting more RAM.
As for loading time, I think the HD has the biggest role in that. -

I have 2gb of RAM and BF2 stutters like hell for the first 3-5min of any game.
People with more RAM and more powerful systems also report the same problem.
Some have it others don't, unfortunately there really is no remedy but 2gb of RAM is highly recommended for BF2.
