My friends and I have been playing Counter Strike Source for about two years now are we are ready to switch to something a little newer. We love CSS but we want to try something newer with better graphics than CSS. What multiplayer 1st person shooters would you suggest?
Our only criteria is that the game must have the ability to play w/BOTs in case we need a few extra players. If the game has an objective, like plant a bomb or rescue hostages that is a big plus also since it's not just about killing the opponents...
-
i'll just say tf2 now to get that out of the way
-
Thanks, TF2 has also been around for a while... We all have pretty powerful PCs and we're trying to find somehting that has really nice graphics.

Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
Borderlands is good.
-
AVA free online multiplayer shooter
soz fps. not sure if you can set up teams -
TF2, Left4Dead, BattleField Bad Company 2, COD4, MW2(if you want)
-
COD4 , medal of honor series...
-
I second Bad Company 2. Don't think bot play is in yet but you do have different objectives such as capturing enemy flags or planting/disarming explosives. Best game I've played in a while.
-
Is it possible to set up teams and balance the teams w/BOTs in all of those games?
-
For Co-Op game, Borderlands is very fun. Especially since you don't need a full group, just play with whichever friend is on.
Playing with someone you know if better because of the loot system. I played random until I met a few players through the game. I see players loot constantly, berserker grabbing siren class mods, berserkers grabbing Sniper rifles when there are 2 hunters in the group.
Aside from that, it's a lot of fun. -
Doesn't have bots, but America's Army 3 is free. It is a bit different in that it strongly encourages team-play and tactics instead of your typical "run-and-gun" FPS behaviour. It aims to be very realistic, and I think it is more realistic than pretty much any FPS out there.
Also, it's in its late beta stages. That means there are still one or two bugs around. But it has great graphics, and it is 100% enjoyable despite the beta.
Furthermore, new content is added regularly. For example, the Medic class should be up soon, as well as a few new maps. -
Left for dead 2 is mad fun
You always play in a 4 person team, if theres people missing they just default to being bots. Endless fun.
-
Dude. Id say you give TF2 a little more credit. Yes, it has been around awhile, and sure, the graphics may not be realistic, but thats not the point. Its all about team work, and bot support is released to an extent, but it goes without saying that its fun with only a couple people too. While it has been around awhile, its always being updated, as they're in the middle of the engie update right now, and still have a few more class updates, and they do updates for fun, like "The Classless Update." And the graphics, well, they're still fun, and since you all have "pretty powerful computers" you get to play it with all the eye candy turned way up. Its a seriously fun game, one of the only ones i play regularly.
-
I would have agreed with this maybe year and half ago. But since then every update seems to be another nail on the coffin. I have suspicion Valve is slowly trying to kill TF2 to get players to buy their new games.
-
Buy TF2. It won't prevent you from getting another game. Anyways, your snazzy g73 deserves more than one game
-
I agree, I have that game and it's fun. Looking for something a little more tactical than blasting zombies
-
Shadowrun...
May not have the largest community, but it is the best competitive FPS ever made imo...
It's cheap, has amazing graphics and a competitive environment exists (mainly composed of xbox 360 players - the game is cross platform). -
Yeah watched a review for Shadowrun. It has auto-aim for PC... The reviewer said it's annoying and unsettling when you see the aiming jerked away from what you want to do. Especially since most PC gamers turn off any mouse assistance.
-
Let me clarify that...
I've played it since launch, and I can confirm there is NO auto-aim whatsoever when using mouse. The only auto-aim ever encountered is when playing with an xbox 360 controller instead of a mouse.
Aim assist was put on 360 controller use for obvious balance reasons. -
Oh ok. Someone should email GameSpot that there is no aim-assist considering they spent a good amount of time on that during the review.

Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
BC2... isn't that what all the kids are playing these days?
Edit:
AND you can get a 4 pack deal on Steam right now. -
Definitely TF2, MW2, L4D2 and BC2~
-
In MW2 and BC2, can you have teams and bots? Are there objectives or is it just deathmatch?
thx -
Is this deal dead? I don't see it on the steam page. If it's alive, anyone want to get in on the 4 pack?
-
You can have teams but i don't thin, you have bots sry. But those are seriously good games and if you like fps, you shouldn't miss out on those 2 games. Get BC2 tho its so much more better than MW2. check my thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=465412
And there are modes other than deathmatches. ex. BC2/MW2
Conquest/Domination (base capturing) and Squad Rush/demolition or Search and destroy(destroying the objective) there's more though but i think MW2 has more objective based modes. I still recommend BC2 more though

Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Bah! Looks like it was a Steam error. This is what's posted at the link now.

Sorry :\ -
I could not tell whether that was sarcasm or not, but I'll assume it wasn't.
Anyways, no need to be closed-minded... If you want something truly unique and tactical, as you stated, I would definitely just give it a try.
Shadowrun is a hate it or love it game, and that's because there are people who would rather play the run of the mill shooters (like Halo and Call of Duty) rather than shooters with an actual skill gap that is directly related to how well you do in game. If you want a shooter that actually reflects decision making, timing and teamwork more than accuracy, then Shadowrun is the way to go.
Here is a montage of a skilled 360 Player at work in a collection of scrims.

There aren't any PC Montages, but I know someone with gameplay if you're interested, graphics have the potential to be a lot better but the gameplay looks pretty much the same. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
mw2
no bots, but the matchmaking is a lot like halo. in fact, if you are familiar with halo matchmaking, it is almost exactly the same. you pick the type of game you want to play, party up with your friends if they are available, and then it finds a specific game for you to join, and it will be full. and you and your friends will be on the same team as long as you created a party before searching for a game.
there are a large variety of gametypes on mw2:
team deathmatch, search and destroy, capture the flag, demolition, domination (king of the hill), others...
mw2 has its faults, and most people think BC2 is better, apparently, but I for one just can't stand BC2. i don't know what it is about it, but it just felt wrong.
so my vote is mw2. it feels kinda counter-strikey, much moreso than BC2, so you'll feel right at home.
