I've never been in this forum before. I want to choose between Dell Latitude TM E6500 and Dell XPS M1530. But I dun know what is different between Quadro NVS 160M and Geforce 8600M GT. Which graphic card is better? My friend says that i should choose 8600M. but i'm not sure. thanks so much

    Welcome to NBR!
Both DDR2 and DDR3 8600M GT will destroy the quadro. As it has twice as much memory bandwidth and 4x as many shader pipelines 8 vs 32. So the 8600M GT is by far the better choice.

Agreed, the 8600 should give around twice as much performance as the 160M, perhaps more (depends on the games).

You can have a rough idea of the performance of mobile graphics cards here. The exact values are obtained with very different systems so it is only approximate, but the 8600 is definitely better than the 160M.

If your budget allows, you can have an E6500 with a better graphics card: it's the Dell Precision M4400. It's not cheap though.

you mean M4400 with Quadro FX 770M, 512MB or Quadro FX 1700M, 512MB? are they better than 8600? My budget is around 1800 plus tax. Which one you guys recommend? thanks

With an $1800 budget, you're wasting your money going with an overpriced Dell over an MSI, Asus, or Sager.

The 1700M is slightly overclocked in relation to the 770M. If you have the budget, the 1700M is slightly more powerful than the 770M, but the 770M probably has a better performance/price ratio.

Either should give performance comparable to the 8600.

With that budget you can either get a new XPS or a refurbished M4400 from the Dell Outlet. If you don't mind getting a refurbished system, the M4400 is WAY better than the XPS. Build quality is better, warranty and support are MUCH better. Precision is the top-of-the-line laptops Dell sells to top executives and large corporations. Even though it is refurbished, if you have any problems like scratches or dents etc you can just call Dell and ask them to repair, in YOUR place, at no charge, in particular those three.

This is my opinion, but it is because I use my laptop (E6400, which is the 14-inch version of the E6500) mostly for work, therefore I need something reliable that never fails when I need it. If you are a gamer, you probably have different needs (more gaming and less work probably), so the XPS is much better value for money. You can always pay 200$ more or so to buy the better warranty if you want it.

I agree with this. The only reason I went with Dell is because their warranty and support in Europe is fantastic. If you don't plan on buying a good warranty (it is free with Latitude and Precision laptops but not with XPS), then you are better off with other brands.

For 1800$ USD, go for the MSI or Asus with the 9800M GS or 3870/4850/4870.

Thks for your opinions. they help me a lot. I use my laptop for working more than playing game. I will take it to VietNam. So, i don't think Dell have a good warranty and support in Vietnam. I'm thinking about ASUS G50Vt-B1, ASUS G71G-Q1 and Gateway P-7808u. How do you guys think? Sorry for asking a lot questions ^.^

The G50V is great bang for buck, I think around christmas they were going for not much more than $1000 for a laptop with a 9800M!

Actually, two colleagues of mine say ASUS has fantastic support in Asia (it's a bit surprising to me knowing that in Europe their service is crap). So I guess the G50 is a good choice.

Be careful not to lose your receipt because i heard that asus asks for the receipt each time there's a repair under warranty. If you have lost yours, it calculates your warranty based on the date of manufacture of your laptop. But let's hope you will not have to deal with asus customer service.
