Sounds to me like a perfect example of DRM screwing over a paying customer. Just wait 'til EA pulls the plug on all copies of BC2 the moment BF3 hits the shelves.

Check your firewall and make sure the ports are opened/the application is allowed

You could try registering the key on Origin, EAs digital store and try again.
They install the very latest client so no need to patch it up later.

If that fails its probably a ISP issue.

Is this just when you are trying the multiplayer aspect of the game? Is it Punk Buster that is displaying the message? I had issues when I first installed BC2 due to Punk Buster. It needs manually updating (if memory servers me correctly). Just google it (cant give you a direct link to anything at the moment, at work, and we have a nasty firewall :-/) and see if that works (google "manually update punk buster" for results)

Maybe the version off Amazon is corrupted?
Did you try installing it off Origin?

Try to manually update punkbuster mate. It solved a similar problem.
Also if you're behind a router, put your pc under DMZ.

    PunkBuster Online Countermeasures

    PBSetup for all windows games

Sounds like a punkbuster problem and may be a reinstall of the game would be better than cracking it.
