    Hi guys,
Registered just today. I ordered - have not received yet - a new Inspiron 1720 - Intel Core 2 Duo T 9300 - 2.5 Ghz - 6 MB L2 Cache - not a bad C.P.U. - 17" WUXGA, 1920X1200, 4GB shared memory DDR 2 at 667, 256 MB Nvidia GeForce 8600 M GT. There was no further option available on video card. Vista Home Premium - and other gadgets - like Blue Ray writer - (a big mistake! - writes only HD.).
What Nvidia card can I upgrade to - is it 8800 series - difference between GT, GTX, GTS. Is there anything extreme I can replace with? - I guess that a 512 Mb is the ceiling, right? Yes, one card slot only. Please provide info on model - also where to shop at.
    Thanks
    Alexander

You cannot upgrade your video card. In some instances, the manufacturer may have another option, but since that's the best you can get right now for your i1720, that's what you're stuck with I'm afraid.
Welcome to NBR, enjoy your stay. :)

Actually, the Dell 17inch inspiron lines all have interchangeable video cards... I have the 7900GS and that would connect to yours, but you would have to desolder the heatpipe and resolder yours to it. Your only upgrade though is likely to be the 7950 GTX...

The 1720 only supports the 8400GS and 8600GT dedicated cards. The XPS lines are a different chassis, and the graphics cards for them are most likely only compatible with the laptop it's made for. I don't know where you heard that you can put a 7950GTX or 7900GS in it.

Yeah, you can't change the graphics card for the Inspiron 1720 unless you want to downgrade to a 8400 GS. Good Luck. And have a moderator close this thread.
