i found another laptop with the following CPU-GPU pair
    i5 520M and ATI mob rad 5145

is that a better combo than i7 720QM and nvidia GT 230M?

    With your budget.

IMO buy a really cheap laptop. Wait for one of those deals from Dell or Lenovo for a 14" notebook for $150-200 after rebates.

Then do some research on how to make a mini-desktop gaming machine.
    - Motherboards with AMD chipsets can be had for as low as $40
    - You can buy a Phenom II on sale for less than $100 easily
    - You can wait for deals on HD5770, (faster than any mobile GPU). People overclock these beasts to 900 core/1400 memory...
    - Find a case used or try to get one free at yard sale whatever.
    - NewEgg has sales on Power Sources all the time more than enough for Phenom II/HD5870

And pretty much you got a gaming machine faster than any notebook with single GPU.

Why can't you do that? If you want to game, that's the best option in your budget.

Why do you need to game on a notebook?

first of all, i can't ship cuz my dad won't let me use his credit card.
secondly, my dad's funding, and he will definitely prohibit this.

maybe i'll do this once i'm independent.

besides, my budget has increased and now i can buy the laptops with the mentioned GPUs. just confused which one should i buy.

    again, thanks,

Dude what are you smoking? 260 SLI would destroy the 5870m. The 5870m is a downclocked 5770 and even one 5870m would have trouble keeping up with a single 260. 260 SLI is roughly around a desktop 5870 which again obliderates the 5870m.
