I can't get the game to work...

and I can't get steam to work...

    and I can't find a troubleshooting guide...

Does the game need to be updated?

Have you actually bought the game and installed using the CD/DVD purchased?
    What are your PC specs?
Are there any errors during installation?

yeah, I just bought the game....

spent a half an hour installing

and now I realize you have to log into steam for whatever god forsaken reason, but I can't

    it's say...updating steam....

and then create new account, put in user name and password, and then it says that it is not possible.

BECAUSe...It's in offline mode, how then do I go ONLINE?

    Router Problems

Routers can cause connectivity problems. Linksys routers and Wireless routers especially can cause this. Dual WAN Routers are not compatible with Steam. If you have a stand-alone router and you are having connection problems, you can always bypass the router and plug your computer directly into your modem to see if the router is the problem.

I think this may be the problem...

I'm on a linksys, also use wireless....so, if the router is the problem, how do I resolve this?

You can try connecting your DSL/Cable modem directly to your notebook via LAN cable and try it out.

You can also try forwarding/opening the ports needed to play this game (can be found on the games official website)

You can also set your router so that your computer is on the DMZ. This will leave your system wide open and is normally not recommended (without other firewall protection, etc...). This should get it working as it's generally like connecting the modem directly to your notebook. If it doesn't work by doing any of these 3 suggestions, then you're gonna have to contact the makers of HL2 as they may be able to resolve the problem in no time.
