I just started using my new AW M14X R2, with the NVidia GT 650M (2.0GB). I installed and ran GW2 and looked at the settings when I use the auto-detect I get medium to low settings. Is this normal? I tried setting it manually to best appearance, but then it gets choppy. I have no idea how to make sure my video card is working appropriately. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Yep, sounds about right. GW2 is more demanding than it can deliver (in my opinion), and GT-650M non-overclocked (and probably DDR3 memory) isn't enough to keep up with it at higher settings.

The Alienware M14x R2 has two options of GT650M so I believe the 2GB version is indeed GDDR5. Not going to change how auto-detection routines work though.

Ya, it's the GDDR5. With the auto-detect settings I'm getting about 40 FPS. With everything on best appearance it's down to 20 FPS. It still looks good with the mid range settings but I just wanted to be sure this is normal.

    Thanks for the replies!

I'm surprised it runs that well on max settings, GW2 is really demanding. Medium/low does sound about right though, so I wouldn't worry about anything. Congrats on the new laptop!

I'm not sure what everyone is talking about with GW2 being really demanding. I ran it for 2 weeks on my HD3000 without even realizing it.

Are you sure Optimus is running the game on the 650 and not the integrated GPU?

No, I'm not sure how to check that. Any help would be much appreciated!

I don't have an Nvidia GPU in my PC, so I'm not 100% sure how everything is laid out, but here's the process, I think.

    Right click the desktop.
    Click Nvidia Control Panel.
Click 3D settings, then Manage 3D settings.
    Click the Program Settings tab.
Choose GW2 from the Program list.
Choose High Performance for the processor to use.

Hopefully that's right. That's what it looks like from what I see online.

Thanks a bunch! I did that and although the settings didn't change I'm getting an extra 10 FPS... up to average of 50.
