i thought i should just configure it, but
i've been told i gotta download somekind of driver to play counter strike in here.

Well, the x1400 is going to lag a little with CS:S on a smoke grenade, but it shouldn't at the lowest settings. Again, we need to know if you're running Vista. If so, this could explain a lot as the current video drivers for Vista are not exactly stable. However, speaking of drivers, your safest bet is to just use Dell's drivers. The Omega drivers might be better, but they may be worse, especially if you're using Vista.

Have you defragged and uninstalled all the bloatware (especially with antivirus, Norton AV sucks up alot of resources)? Are you running in OpenGL mode for CS? The X1400 shouldn't have any problems with CS, even with a little smoke. Worst comes to worst, a clean install of XP should fix the issue.

i agree with zoomastigophora. u should us open gl cause thats what the game was designed to run in. and try like a lower color bit depth. like 24 or 16 maybe. try tweeeking ur api specific settings in ur catalyst driver settings. try triple buffer and if u really need to try force 24 bit depth. thats all i know. i pay counter strike source on an x1600 @ 1650x1050 with everything up except aa and texture filter on trilinier, and the game runs ok UNTIL someone throws a smoke. smoke is actually a very graphics intensive thing to render.

The smoke in CS:S is alot more optimized than in CS 1.6. In 1.6, it looks like the game engine is just spamming millions of small gray pixels to achieve the smoke effect. But agreed, smoke is very graphically intensive. Even my X1600 lags after 5-6 condensed smoke in one area.

Speaking of CS:S, Cat 7.2 seems to have completely screwed up CS:S' perception of widescreen, so now everything is widescreen, but vertically. It's so weird :p

Can everyone stop talking about CS:S? He's talking about 1.6...

Uninstall the driver you got from Dell, use driver Cleaner Pro to delete all traces (google it), then install the latest Omega Drivers. See if that helps. Otherwise, I assume you're not running in battery saving mode or something else optimised to prolong life, although even with that CS 1.6 shouldn't present any sort of problem...

but at least, you don't have to worry - if it's working right, the X1400 is more then capable at running CS 1.6 or CZ at the highest settings at about 150fps - it's even quite decent for Counter Strike Source. So hopefully you can sort your problem out with just changing drivers....it's actually incredible what difference drivers can make, you wouldn't believe it.

also though, how do other games run, or have you tried?
