I was just wondering since the Insprion 9400 and the E1705 are basically the same machine can I upgrade the graphics card from ATI x1400 to say NVidia Go 7900 . Is this possible ,any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

For Dell laptops, most(note, most) of their lines with configurable GPUs mean that they are technically upgradable through Dell's Proprietary system, so in other words yes you can upgrade it.

It's pretty much Dell proprietary laptops only, and only for certain models.

There are exceptions such as high end Alienware/Sager/etc. notebooks.

The 9400 and 1705 aren't BASICALLY the same system, they ARE the same system. Just two different names because Dell is strange like that :/

So what can go into one, can go into the other. And the GPU is a relatively easy switch

the 9400 supports the 7900gs, so yes, he can upgrade to it, and the bios supports it, if he had the gma 950 he couldnt upgrade, as the board is different, no graphics slot, but the 1400 to the 7900 should be no problem

Thats just completely untrue. In fact, not only can you upgrade to the 7900GS, you can upgrade to the 7900GTX if you really wanted to...
