OK, i just got an amazing idea:
heres what i want to do: i want to get an hp 65xx laptop, now that being said, it doesnt offer the 86xxM series chips so i wanted to buy this lappy and call them up and ask them to not include a video card (in the hopes i could buy a 8600m gt from dell or ebay (just the gfx card))
what i want to know is:
1. is it possible to upgrade from intel x3100 to 8600m gt or gs in the 6500
2. same question except with 8400m to 8600m gt or gs
3. would dell go for it (i would provide a bogus story if i have to about my friends birthday and how he needs to upgrade)
4. would the hp ppl go for it? (same thing, bogus story of some sort in order to sway personal appeal)
so basically, is the hp configured with a pci-x slot that i could use to upgrade later.
if not ill just go right for the dell vostro 1500 (the only reason why im asking is because im considering hp 6500 with the 30% off coupon that it comes with)
any help is cool
(need this info by 3 days time max.)

You would definitely have to buy a laptop with MXM tech inside
the x3100 is an integrated part and will be soldered onto the mainboard so is not upgradeable
unless you buy a machine that has confirmed MXM see http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/
the only other option is the impending release of a couple of products that sit in your express pc card slot (new style) which allow an external desktop graphics card to be used in an external enclosure, (does require a separate monitor too I think so no gaming on the move)
good luck
but check the specs first -
imo there us no way from hp they will not include a card

LOL, unless you know how to solder, good luck. Even then, let me put it this way:
IGP'S ARE NOT UPGRADEABLE!!!!!!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
im pretty sure anyone else could've conveyed your message without using such big letters. not to mention without your blatant disrespect for a question from someone NOT in the 'KNOW-HOW'.
anyways: i read the mxm-stuff and if i ordered the hp w/ a 8400 and then swapped it out, could it work? would heating be a problem? would DELL sell me a card?
do you know of any other online retailers that sell mxm-cards?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
The HP's GPUs are soldered into the Mobo, they are not MXM. Dell's newest GPUs are not MXM, they are proprietary and only work in Dells. Here I'll do it again, this time a bit simpler:
GPUs ARE NOT UPGRADEABLE!!!!!
yet I know that statement is not completely true, but the people who have upgradeable GPUs don't ask the question, because they already know the answer.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
thats EXACTLY the answer i wanted:
1. i have no idea how hp integrates their cards
2. i have no idea how dell integrated their cards
3. i have no idea which laptops have upgradeable cards
so by you answering my questions a bit more bluntly than i would like, i finally got an answer that i can go with.
but i do agree with you that it is my stupidity (i call it ignorance, u prolly dont) that caused me to assume that most, if not all gfx cards of the same 'class' are interchangeable.
just goes to show that one should never assume, because u make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'
so what im going to do now is get the vostro with the 8600M gt right off the bat, and absorb the monetary and physical design losses i will incurr.
(btw this isn't a personal attack but i am suggesting that you try to be more courteous to people who aren't as technologically enlightened as you are, just a suggestion) -

Calm down Lithus. I know it's your job to scream at newbies, but you don't need to work at it 24/7. Take a break, relax.
