Hi guys, so i am living now on a college campus and before i moved here i did not have any of these problems. Whenever i want to play call of duty 4 or 5 my ping is at 500 at the least in every server(these arent oversea servers either). I dont know why my ping is so high on a college internet. but my speedtest.net is very high? can someone help me fix this, i am on a college internet so my ability to mod or port forward is null.

Is there router you can access? Or is it the colleges, meaning you cannot touch it?

They could be blocking the ports or the application, causing excessive ping.

I know my router, when it was blocking connections, would have my ping up in the 300s, now that I have it properly configured, it is between 30 and 50 usually, and I play on a lot of US servers and im in Canada.

So im assuming the ports or connections are blocked, not much you can do, unless you possibly talk to the campus tech support and see if you can have that application or data type removed form the blockage.

Sounds like they are blocking ports. Many a college will do this on purpose to discourage heavy bandwidth use.

Yeah, here (on a campus too) I have nice ping but packet loss is the problem; it's probably to stop this kind of heavy use.

Although we do have a system to register Xboxes for live, though i'm not sure many kids have the time to play...

I just graduated from college and let me tell you that our school did everything they could to pretty much stop a good online gaming experience...College networks suck for allowing access.

I bet if you found a hotspot around your school that was not through your college, you would be able to play a lot better.

Lol yes, there is nothing that you can do. They control the internet, and the only way I could possibly see you being able to allow your data to travel freely through "their" network is if you talk to them. Other than that your stuck.

i talked to them and they have said they will not open any ports for PC gaming, but is that even the problem? When i lived at home with this same pc i had no problem,so i know that it is not a pc problem, but i have never heard of a network causing high pings. Especially a Universities high speed internet. All of my other games seem to run fine. Its just Cod4 And 5

You could get a student group together and sign petitions to allow for a better ping for online gaming! DOWN WITH THE MAN!

To solve this problem you can:
    1. Move off campus so you have no firewall between you and the Internet

    2. Have you tried hosting dedicated servers for the games you like within the network? You could setup a dedicated server for COD4. If you are within the network other local computers should not have to worry about the firewall.

    look here:

    Shady non suggested alternative:
    3. You need Leverage... Find the admin of computers for the school. Take him to a college party and get some choice pictures of him doing something that he doesn't want known.

Make him open the ports...or you plaster the pictures all over school.
    Profit...

    lol :D
