    Hello,

I have a high resolution workstation monitor I'd like to try using for some pc games. It is a 22" LCD monitor and has a native resolution of 3840 x 2400. (No, that's not a typo). Are there any good consumer video cards that can do accelerated 3D at 3840 x 2400? I have a new desktop pc for playing games with Core i7 cpu and it has 2 PCI Express x16 slots. Would I need two graphics cards or would just one card work?

Also, is there any software limitation in current games that would prevent them from running at that resolution?

    Thank you

You wanna play games at that?

May I suggest 2 GTX 295? And of you course you'd be playing on low-settings >_>

    That, is insane

Usually, 1 graphics card can out put to 2 separate monitors, but you will most likely need 2 high end graphics cards to handle games like CoD4 at that resolution.

The majority of games out there wont run at that resolution anyway, unless there are workarounds to enable custom resolutions.

I suggest a normal monitor.. LOL
If you are really into it, 2x GTX295 or 2x 4870x2

You'd ebst post at desktopreviews for a more complete answer, but yes, chances are you'd need 2 GPUs to properly render such a high resolution.

I'd suggest a x2 type of graphics card(i.e those with 2 GPUs on them).

Nvidia GTX280, Nvidia GTX295, or ATI HD4870X2. those are all desktop cards btw, and sadly cost a pretty penny :)

Well the mods want us to post there, just that there's less discussion going on because people mostly discuss parts as full desktop configs are more numerous than laptops lol :p

    It's an old IBM T221. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_T220/T221_LCD_monitors )
Actually, the nice thing about consumer cards is that they're cheap compared to workstation kit. The quad graphics card SGI workstation this was used with had a six figure price tag.

    Yep 2 ati 4870x2. or nvidia gx280.

look for reviews at 2500*1600 and see which does better and then decide from there.

there was a review with the core I7 Oc'd and 3 nvidia gtx280 (tri sli) @that resolution and it got over 100 fps. but i cant find it. but the 4870x2 is suppse to be faster.

Yes I did a little searching on my own, and that looks like the current "king of the hill" card for pc games.

How does it work with using two cards? Does one card render half the screen and the other card does the other half? Or do the cards alternate the every other scan line? Or every other frame? Is the behavior configurable? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to understand how it will work!! :)

The SGI used four single-link DVI connections, each connection rendered a 960×2400 "stripe" of the screen.

FYI this is all for fun. I'm just looking for fun ways to re-use this old monitor at home, as it was recently decommissioned at my work.

Crossfire 4870 X2's, which fortunately (If Sapphire's rebate is still in order) can be picked up for $800 total.

4870X2's perform better at higher resolutions than even Quad-SLI GTX-295's.

No i think one card renders one frame and then the other card does the next. and keeps doing that. to wrap it up. Lol.
