Hmmm. Should I get Starcraft before getting starcraft 2?

I've never played a starcraft before, except once at a friend's, (I didn't last too long..) so I was wondering if it would be easier if I learned Starcraft before getting SC2 just for the learning boost.

SC2 is so different from SC [imo], that you won't need to play SC to be better at SC2.

    It's like TFC vs TF2.

    Hey, what's TFC? And I assume TF2 = Team Fortress 2?

Anyway, OP, no. I really wouldn't advise it. It's pretty much a new game. The units are the same and so on but there are new editions and the fact you can select a lot more units and other things, make it just annoyingly difficult to learn one and realize things don't work how you think.

nope, the game is enjoyable enough by itself that you don't need to play the prequel.

TFC is "Team Fortress Classic"; the valve made mod for Half-Life 1 [made by same ppl of Quake Fortress and TF2].

Anyways, like SC vs SC2, any benefits you get from learning TFC, do not help you in TF2 because they no longer exist or are implemented very differently.

Ok, I've never played TFC, but I get your point. Will purchase SC2 soon!

Although, its really amazing from a standpoint totally beside the in game playability aspect...
Its a bit difficult to say how innovative the whole cinematic cutscene and plot aspects (whats the term I'm looking for here?) of sc2 are, its all a bit like mass effect 2 or something. The original starcraft on the other hand is truly so well done its just so obvious that it was way ahead of its time.

I would go so far as to say starcraft 1 is a much better game if you're the type who zones out completely while actually playing and then watches the cutscenes as if they're thoroughly produced scenes from a sci fi film.

And I also think all of it makes you appreciate sc2 more.

However there is one reason most people answering can't really advise you... that is most of us have played starcraft 1 first. It is how we were introduced to the starcraft world. Being introduced to all of starcraft for the first time through sc2 is not something we can pretend to know about. :)

I doubt most people bought SC2 for its single-player; it is a game where the meat and gravy is the competitive multiplayer scene.

As a standalone multiplayer game, it's hard to rank SC2 against SC1 because they are two different games from 2 different eras of game-making. It'd be kinda like comparing the upcoming Dota2 to Dota (the original), where the latter has better graphics, and added things, and removed things.

Thats true they are very hard to compare, being from different eras.

However I do think quite a few people are interested in sc2 single player. I mean, they didn't do all that ME2 like graphics work not to mention voice acting for nothing, you don't see it at ALL in multiplayer.

But I'm not really a gamer... I can't claim my opinion is similar to those of the masses.

Other than the lore little to take from SC1 before playing SC2.

The game plays pretty different with the new mechanics I think it could hurt more than help to go directly from one to the other.

No. For campaign you can just use the mod for SC2 to play the first Starcraft campaign.

I was going to recommend the mod, its very close to the original but not exact.

I plan to do a full video series on it soon.

I'm not going to argue about which was better for it's time, but starcraft 2 is far and away the better game to play today.

There's really no point playing SC1 if you're new. The community for SC2 is massive, there are leagues, tutorials, youtube casters, a huge mod community with support built into the game, the mechanics are updated to modern times, the graphics are 3d, so you can play in your display's native resolution (most likely not possible in SC1 unless you have an old monitor), and probes mine minerals automatically. You can hotkey large amounts of units into a single control group. Matchmaking keeps track of your performance and matches you up against players of similar skill. You can also do matchmaking in teams with your friends. You will lose most/all of your games in SC1, because the players that are left are mostly experts. In SC2 you'll win about half your games (maybe less at first), but you WILL get wins. SC2 is pretty amazing. I wouldn't spend any time with SC1.

Nope. I played Starcraft 2 with joy without even hearing about the original Starcraft.

I just had to pop in and say that TFC is probably my most favorite game of all time. It was so much fun back in the day.

there's a free mod available in the steam store that tries to recreate TF using the source engine, while staying a bit more true to the original in terms of graphics and gameplay.
