Sins of the solar Empire fits the bill quite nicely.

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident has been compared a lot to Homeworld. I haven't played it, but am considering buying it on Steam for $10. You can look up the reviews on Gamespot or IGN.

I bought and played this one back when it came out.

VERY engrossing storyline and fairly decent gameplay, similar to homeworld.

I played it after finishing Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, and Homeworld 2.

If there was ever a FANTASTICALLY AWESOME series that deserved continued development, it was Homeworld.

Otherwise Sins of a Solar Empire is similar gameplay and also very fun, though no concrete campaign to play to (yet). More of a homeworld + civilization though.

There should be a demo of it I believe, but otherwise it's on sale for $30 at Best Buy this week.

Yeah, X3 is sort of like Eve Online single player. It is fun for those who like to get REALLY deep into space simulation...but I wouldn't say it is that similar to Homeworld.

I once considered N:TJI since it was originally designed to be the successor to Imperium Galactica II (good game, btw). However I heard/read Nexus was very buggy.

It wasn't for me...although I did have to set it to use only a single processor core (processor affinity in the task manager, you can set it by right clicking the process) or else it would crash.

Then again, that was years ago, and I'd bet the Steam version has all of the necessary updates to make it work just fine.
